Well...Its finally done !!

I finished the installation of my Slee rear bumper today, and here is what I found...

The swing-arm assy was fairly easy to put the final touches on (install the bearings and seal, measure my tire/rim for the carrier, assemble the latch, wire up the License plate lamp..etc..)

Only two things were a bit challanging for me (not bad cosidering I am an idiot when it comes to mechanical repair !!)

#1 was the damn top bearing cap that finishes off the swing-arm pivot...

I SWEAR that the black cap was bigger than the opening it was supposed to tap into !! I screwed with that cap for a half an hour, finally I had to pinch it in a vise and roll the outer lip inward to get it to fit, and even then, I put a small dent in it (I will be calling ya` for another one Christo )...

#2 was that there was no mention in the instructions (unless I didnt see them) of the size drill bit needed to install the wire clamps for the License lamp wire...I drilled a slightly larger hole than I shoud have, so I had to use larger screws.

Oh. and maybe there should be a little better description of where to tap into the harness for the lamp..(It was no big deal for me, I just used the old trailer harness wiring on the vehicle side that I disconnected when I ditched my hitch)

I painted the latch and hook, and checked everything over...It looks GREAT !!

Here`s a couple of pics of the finished product !!

OK, you one-upped me! You have a center cap in your spare. You're a good man! :)

Couple of comments. We are working on a better solution for the cap. However as always better solutions cost more and for us it typically means custom machining. However a screw on aluminum cap would work better. I will see what we can do on a retrofit to old bumpers.

As for mudflaps, the old ones will not work. If you hold them up there you will see what I mean. They are way to low. I think a simple flat piece of rubber bolted to the leading lip of the wing should work good.

We have looked at custom moulded mudflaps, but no-one is going to buy $500 mudflaps. Still looking though.

SinCity...since I know you're going to attempt to fit L-shocks I thought I'd add the info that mud flaps won't work on the Slee bumper unless you mount them somehow from the bottom. On FULL compression the 35-inchers JUST make contact with the bumper. This is NOT the case with N101 shocks.

NOTE: This again disproves some of of the negativity about the N74L benefits on the other thread. We won't start that debate here. There is more extension AND compression and therefore the wheel moves more rearward and JUST nicks the Slee bumper on FULL compression. The contact is little and NO rubbing (or whatever) hinders your progress.

If you put a flap there you'll rip it off when wheeling. Search for a flap that'll mount from the bottom of the bumper.

Thanks for the advice on the flaps John !

For now, I will be o.k. with a larger mudguard because I am only running `33s,
But I will be moving up to 35`s as SOON as these MT/R`s are worn out :)

Oh, put me down for a new-style cap (when available) Christo...I cant have this ghetto-looking dent in mine !! ;)

Wait until you see my next addition to my rig...Its gonna put it over the top ! ( Its secret for now!) :D

I had the exact same thing happen to the cap on a Kaymar carrier, and I tried to be careful by using a rubber mallet (still dented the aluminum cap). If ithe cap were flat, like an oil seal but w/ no hole in the middle, you could use a seal driver or 2x4 to hammer it in.

I'm glad that I haven't made any final decision on which cruiser I'm going to buy in the near future... you guys are slowly turning me ;)

Come over to the dark side....... :D

on that cap. if you think it was hard to get on, just wait until you try to take it off w/o marring up your powdercoat...

at least w/ my bumper, it's still rattle-canned and not painted to match yet so a few scratches from taking mine back off didn't kill me.

S#$T !! Forget about taking it off and damaging the paint...I already boogered up the powdercoat around the top trying to put it ON !! :frown:

Oh, and earlier post mentiond a dead-blow mallet..thats what I tried to use first..then I moved up to a 5lb sledge to finish it off (literally!).

But I dare you to ask me if I am happy with it... :D :D :D

As an alternative to the mudflaps, since your bumper is staying black, line-x the wing and your chipping worries will be over. Another alternative would be a piece of 3M clear poly stoneguard. No chips, no rust, no worries. Scrapes would mess either alternative up but who cares, I got plenty-o-scrapes on the factory bumpers. :D

Great Idea...I cant believe I didnt think of that !!

Maybe a rubberized undercoating, or like you mentioned, Line-X..etc....Hmmm...

Thats what I love about this forum !! :D

I would think Line-X would be pretty cool. No way for us to do it on production ones, but can certainly be done by the owner.

LINE-X It is then !!

The Death Valley Trip is March 15 - 19 but I think there is already a waiting list. You should contact cruiserdrew since he is the one that have been organizing this trip the last 3 years.

You should do the Rubicon, it is such a fantastic trail and it is so beautiful. Don't let this guys talk you in or out of it. It'll be worth it. We can help you get through it, its not that big of a deal.

If anyone knows about taking a 100 through the Rubicon, it would be this guy. :D

Next time you hang out for dinner on the last night...we had WAY too much food. :grinpimp:

And ICE CREAM! I ended up chucking three gallons of ice cream that you guys didn't eat! Remind me never to volunteer to have the frozen fridge again! :flipoff2:

yeah but that ice cream was really good w/ the cobbler... it was worth it!

3 gallons extra?

I don't think we could've stuffed much more ice cream into ourselves than we already did.
We should've had some of that the first night ;)
