Not good news from Machine shop

Hey guys,

so the machine shop called and they said my head is warped just a little. they normally can straighten it but don't have the plate/ jig setup long enough for an inline 6. Wanting to charge me 150 bucks but will straighten it for free if they can keep the tool/ plate.

I have a table full of new parts, a clean and ready motor and now I find out it is going to be another 2 weeks and even then it isn't 100% sure it will be level/ flat.

Guess I am just complaining...

What other options do I have? Looks like a new head is 1200... a new motor is 1900... at this point if they can't straighten it out I am thinking about a whole new block/head setup since I have replace about everything else on the truck...

Any help?
 
Go new if you can afford it and I would be grateful if you could post the links to the new head and motor. Cost seem reasonable.
 
I want to know where you found a "new" motor for $1,900.00?
 
Hell....If I could find a new motor for $1,900...I would buy 2 of them. One for now and one for later.
 
Looking for the link again... I swear I didn't make it up. it was 1900 free shipping... Was not OEM though. I am afraid what it would be to get a new OEM motor and head. probably 3800-4K?

If I could find a good quality used head I would go that direction. The shop said they can fix it, but no guarantees. I will keep looking for the link.
 
It is ~$5,600.00 for a short block and a bare head.

19 hundred bucks won't cover the cost for factory hard parts to rebuild a motor. Let alone labor and machine work.
 
Well, guess I misread what I was looking at. If that is the case then I will have to see if they can repair it/ look at a new head.

wouldnt you just want to find another machine shop? Curious but how was this machine shop planning to "straighten it"
 
I actually personally know the owner and a few other guys at this shop. Very well respected shop.
Here is what they will be doing if you are interested. he said they should be able to get it straightened out and then resurfaced.


He gave me a price of 550-650 pending parts for
Cleaning, checking for cracks, straightening, machined, valve guides and valve swap. He told me he would work with me and make sure he make it work for me or they wouldn't charge me. Very solid shop. He did say if my valves were toast it may be more, but not much more. Does this sound right?
 
I thought all that ^^^^ was ~$450-500 & came w/a warranty (I could be wrong but blieve that's the going rate from a reputable shop, others can confirm)? Take it to a shop that will guarantee their work.
 
Have you considered shopping for a good used OEM head or a complete engine that needs rebuilding and start again with that? Or scrap the six and go V8 for more power and better mpg. I like the six but I wonder how much longer toyota will support it.

It depends I guess ..if he does it by the book (ie the Toyota manual) and is meticulous it is a reasonable price. I dont know what the guides and valves cost but since I paid $30+ Cdn for each head bolt recently (I needed 2) ... I cringe thinking what a full set of 24 valves and guides would cost (although it would be highly unlikely you would need too many valves/guides - if at all).
I am sure he would know but make sure that they understand the seals are specific to either intake or exhaust
 
Hollis Page at HP Engines said he can rebuild them all day for $4000 with all new parts . I'll see what he can do just the head for
 
well I have looked at the video a few times and I have a few questions: Buddy says he noted warp by measuring the block surface of the head... then he declares it "pretty good" by measuring down the top of the camshaft bearing caps... why didnt he measure along the cam bearing caps in the beginning so we can see what change (if any) really occurred there? If the camshaft bearings were line bored ... who says that the camshaft caps are "true" to each other anyway?

(he says the cam bore is what matters ... and the cam tops "should be just as true" !?!?!?)

Couldnt you just achieve the same outcome by torquing your aluminum head back onto your iron block and running a few "heat" cycles...when you drive it. I can tell you that the last 90deg on the 14 torque to yield headbolts on the 1FE-FZ are going to exert a lot of force on your head! I dont know.....would like to see the results first hand myself...
 
Something isn't right. They should be able to source out their own damn tools. If they can't do it they should be able to work with another shop that can. Basically they would farm out that part of the job to the other shop and then do the rest for you. That way they make you happy and they still make money. If their too dense to figure that out themselves you need to pull it and take it to someone that knows what they are doing.

I would go somewhere else, doesnt matter how of good friends you are, take it to someone that has the right jigs
