Not another fj60 gas tank recall issue. Called Toyota corporate today.

I had an extremely easy time getting my fuel tank replaced compared to many of you. I went by (late last year) the Toyota dealer in Thomasville Georgia and had them look up the VIN, and I found out that the fuel tank had not been replaced. So I left the Cruiser at the dealer and the tank and lines were replaced in three days. An all together pleasant experience.

Reviving an older thread that was essential to me in getting my 1984 FJ60 fuel tank recall accomplished, so adding notes for future seekers of new fuel tanks:

My repair was accomplished 2/2/2017 by Kendall Toyota of Bend, OR. It was a little over a month-long process to schedule the repair which began with an inquiry to Toyota USA (confirmed eligibility), and involved several times being told it could not be done.

At the time of service, "everything but the main fuel and main return line" was available, and I suggested that they inquire about the use of bulk fuel hose as was done by the Medford dealer (mentioned earlier in the thread).

Once the recall service was finally approved, everyone at the dealership was cool and seemed genuinely happy to work on an old 'cruiser. No cost out of pocket except for a couple 6-packs for the mechanic and service writer as a thank-you.

The dealership my 60 is at requested me to get your VIN# so he can pull up the service file in the system and forward it to his region office so they can expedite.
If you could please text me your VIN or reply here, it's a bit urgent so they can authorize the recall service on mine. It's been at the dealership going on 4.weeks now. My phone # is 213-600-5217

Got my Cruiser back today from the dealership, new tank, new lines, no charge:), I love this forum. Thank you for posting all the info on the tank recall.

Could you please tell me what Toyota dealership did this work for you. I'm trying to gather a list of dealerships that have done this work within the last year or so, so that I can give it to corporate Toyota. My plan is to have corporate contact these dealers and ask them how they did the paperwork etc. to approve the work.

I'm having quite the runaround from my local dealerships on this issue. Parts are available except for fuel lines. I can't even get the dealer to order the AVAILABLE parts for me!!!

I have already opened a ticket with Toyota corporate, and hopefully they will work with me.

I just got off the phone speaking with Toyota Corporate from higher up than the region hq in San Francisco. They said they could not, at the moment, close the fuel tank recall campaign on mine eventhough they researched the recall service done up at Kendall Toyota of Bend, Oregon. They were able to pinpoint the ro order and said it was performed, but in the order, the entries for the two hoses no longer made were left empty, and as far as they were concerned, the recall campaign on that vehicle remains open. This is what they told me. They also said they got alot of people involved trying to locate this information. Now they are contacting Toyota HQ in Japan to try and find a solution to all these 60 series coming in to dealers for this recall. They mentioned trying to possibly get Toyota Japan to reopen manufacture of these hoses in order to facilitate fulfilling all these active recalls, but he assured me it will take some time to get a solution order from Japan. In the meantime, they allowed ALL recall parts put into my 60 to remain in there at no cost, including the $920 new fuel tank and everything else part of the recall EXCEPT the two hoses that are no longer made. The two hoses that are no longer made, will have to be installed by my mechanic, and they are sending me a check for holding on to my car and to help offset the cost of the mechanic installed hoses. In the meantime, they said to periodically check with dealers for the parts becoming available again, and they also have my contact info to ping me in the event the parts become available. If and when the parts become available again, i will be able to bring it into a dealership and have the hoses replaced with the OEM hoses specified in the official and legal recall details. That's about it.
I'm guessing some service managers COULD possibly get in a bit of trouble if they now start to see these recalls completed without the the two hose parts available worldwide.

I worked with Peter at SF Toyota. He is a former LC owner and could not get it done for me. All the parts were in minus the 2 hoses. I was able to track down 2 hoses with the same part that # corrolate (sp) to the recall. I am missing one. Everything was sent back.
There is nothing special about the hoses and even the parts guys could find an existing hose that would work but had to be cut down to length. Regional guy would not approve in SF bay area. SF Toyota has been great and it is not them but Regional managers not approving.

Could you send me the VIN to your Cruiser and the dealership that performed the work. I am trying to build my case for the work to be done.

The Toyota rep I'm working with said he contacted Kendall Toyota in Bend and they didn't have any info on a recall for him.

I'm going to reach out to others on this thread for the same info I'm requesting from you…you can text or call me at (303) 543-8226…thanks

I was told the same thing a few months ago. I ended up making it happen by being politely persistent. They started out saying that there weren't any tanks so I started calling other dealers around the region. Ended up finding one in Atlanta who said there was a tank in Jacksonville. I told the local dealer where to find the part, then "explained" how they'd have to use bulk hose. I think they finally decided that it would be easier to do it than to keep telling me why they couldn't. Oh, it also took a couple of scheduled service appointments so they could "assess" the job.

Bureaucratic pain in the ass, but patient persistence got it done. I made sure to NOT take it out on the individual I was speaking to...Good Luck!

Hope I was able to help in some small way. I know how frustrating dealing with stealerships can be sometimes.

I just had the dealership where I live order all the parts for me. Everything is available except for the fuel lines which are part of the kit apparently. They tell me that they will have to pull the lines and send them off to be reproduced. Other than that seems to be smooth sailing. Just adds a couple days to the time frame.
