Minimal requirements for the rigs will be something like 37+ inch tires (larger prefered) of swamper or bogger or more aggressive variety only.
Does that mean M416 also need a similair size tire like 37"?

How did DesertDude's 35" tires performed so far? His is a bit narrower than normal.

Is there lots of off camber drive so the pop-tent is better off on the top of trailer instead of rooftop?

Does that mean I'm not invited on the '08 Trek?

Did you guys have a 'base camp' set up somewhere on the other side of Monument?

No base camp. We moved every day except the last which we spent hiking.

Don't overlook that this post was not talking about the Trek. For the run that I was talking about there, we would not really want a trailer along. Possibly use one to haul fuel part way, leave it about 60 miles in and refuel/pick it up again on the way out. Maybe.

No popup campers for that run either.

DDs tires worked fine on the Trek. Most of the mud we hit (virtually all of it) had good solid bottom underneath it. It was thick and looked daunting but everyone ground right through it. Lockers at each end really helped the rigs that had 'em. We altered our route a little to avoid a couple of bottomless spots or oozing hillsides.

As an aside... When we were out retrieving the broken rigs we got the chance to look over a D8 cat that was recovered a few weeks ago out there. The operator had drowned in mud when he dropped it through the ice this april while walking it out to a remote minesite. The soft mud he went into had to be at least 12 feet deep and was probably closer to 20 to sink the dozer the way it did.

For the folks who went in with us this year, it happened about a quarter mile down the drainage from that first muddy spot where all the folks got hungup/stuck.

Can you put 37s on an '80 and still have room to let them work?

Would you really be comfortable driving your DD up and using it HARD for a week on a 300 mile run that would require in place repairs or leaving it for a week or more 'til you could get back with parts if something failed. An FJZ80 is a lot more complex to field fix than a '40... And a lot more sensitive to deep water complications.

And then driving it back down the Alaska Highway to get home...

These are just a couple of questions you would want to ask yourself before looking to join into an outong like this.

I'm not going to get into the "can '80s really wheel" debate. I know how capable they are. But while they are a GREAT rig for the trip up and participation in an Alaska Cruiser Trek, I don't think I would be excited about taking on on the sort of run I'm looking at next year.

(My wife has an SOA FJ62 that was not quite ready for the Trek this year. I expect to have it on the road and trail in a week or two. She has decided that she wants one of the roof top campers for it. And she is seriously shopping for "just the right" FZJ80 now too.)

Mark...

actually i had typed some stuff about how i would definitely break something if i did go to 37s and try what you described then deleted it because i didn't want to start up that debate with other 80 owners who might think otherwise. I agree with your concerns and have no intent to go to 37s -- i'm thinking about 255/85 mts right now. the sound of my 80 landing hard on its sliders is scary. the weight of the 80 makes trying what you describe pretty sketchy and getting the suspension up high enough to use the 37s would take a lot. I think my 80 will need some semblance of road to work with to make a trip like that.

Hey there!

Nice pic's you guy's. You missed out on the recovery of my rig! I hope i don't have to make it through life with out seeing you guy's again.
Always looking for ya around the bend! Later John

hi all....I finally found this forum thanks to gb! It's good to see familiar faces here already...Mark, John, Bruce.... (real bummed you weren't able to make it this year, Bruce. It would have been good to see you and meet Charla).

John, I have yet to investigate the damage to my cruiser. I guess I should have gone along on your recovery to keep Darrell in check!!?? Too much rallying, huh??

Just to reiterate what everyone has said already, this was a GREAT trek and I thoroughly enjoyed everyone's company which, to me, is the key to a successful event. Thanks to everyone who made it up!

cheers,

Now, if your up to a true hardcore week and you bring up a rig ready for some true exploration... There *might* be a slot open on one of my runs next year. But this will require true backcountry experience. We'll be moving beyond the furthest point reached on the Trek before we we pitch camp the first day.

Mark, you really know how to talk dirty to a guy like me.
I how long of a drive is it from the stagging area Tahoe to Tok? Ah, yes... 3,260 miles. Plus Calgary to the con, and back home is only 6,400 miles.
Let's see... Leave after work on Wed. 7-4-07. Run the 'con on 7-6-07. Drive to Tok 7-8-07 to 7-11-07. Do an extra-long weekend of AK wheeling 7-12 to 7-19 or so, Back home for work on 7-23. Only 12 vacation days needed. Easy.

Hi Gina, I agree and it's good to see you here!

Rest assured I've been thinking about the ACC (and its honorary outside members) a lot lately. I'll be back.

One question, how can it be possible you guys are still finding DS in your rigs?

I would have thought it would be rallied out by now.

Hey Jim! good to hear from you. Wow, it's like a little reunion. I have been missing out!! I keep thinking I would like to make it down to Pismo. One of these days....

I have been asking myself the same thing about the DS. I thought I had done pretty good with only having one leaf in my spring pack break on the ACT. But I guess my cruiser had a little bit more to give up.

I am going out to Mark's tomorrow to take a look at my cruiser, but from what I hear the "recovery" trip turned into an Alaskan "day trip" complete with a lot of DS flying. My cruiser's damage total includes transfer case, breaks fried, fender body damage, front lights broken, broken pitman arm.

sigh.

What am I gonna do with them boys...????

~ gina

Hey Gina,
Wow lots of broken parts, and I thought Tim rallied hard. (Note too self dont let Darrell drive!!!!!)
It does sound like it turned into one heck of a "day" trip.

John, Keeping looking around the bend----you will for sure see us again!! Sounds like you had a bit of "drama" in your rig's recovery, sorry we missed that!!

We been driving and driving and driving since the trek. We are now in Jasper National Park, going through major culture shock--tourists and people and stores and a heat wave---going back through the photos and thinking of y'all---brings a super warm smile to my heart! Already missing everyone~~~~

For those of you who don't know her already or haven't figured it out, Gina (Xplorn) is Gina Bringman of the Alaska Cruiser Crew. Check out Http://xplorn.com
to see some of her superb photos. I think that she has some galleries up of pictures taken by various participants in the Trek this year. I'd have to stop and count to put a solid number on it, but I'm pretty confident that more Trails covers and Cruiser calendar shots have Gina's name on them than any elses. By a large margin.

Peter you KNOW that there is a spot reserved with your name on it already. Best to add a couple of days on to the Alaska Section of that little journey you describe. Maybe a day or four to sleep afterwards too. ;)

xplorn great photos! wish they were a little larger.

Thank you!

I have debated on the size to post photos over the years and I really do have several good reasons to keep them the size they are, but one of the main ones is the sheer quantity of photos would eat all my space available to me. Besides what is viewable on my site, I have many "hidden" pages for family and other special events.

The ACT2006 photos alone (including ones that I have posted for others) will be somewhere over 400 photos once I get them all there.

....but having said all of that, ACT2006 photos will be available a little larger than some of the older stuff that I have posted...

Cruiser Guy NEEDS HELP!!!

Hi all,

I apologize in advance for the cross posts, but I want to get this seen ASAP.

I'm sending this to a couple of different mailing lists and internet forums. If you can help, or you know someone who might be able to, contact Me ASAP at this emai... cruiser@mtaonline.net ... or at (907) 373-3789. Or contact Jim direct on his cel at (612) 916-1765.

All of you on a couple of these lists and most of you on the rest know Jim Van De Ven. Him and his wife Deb are currently working their way back home (Minnnestoa) from the Alaska Cruiser Trek. I just got off the phone with him. His FZJ80 suffered a front wheel bearing failure at 75 mph on the highway between Seattle and Spokane. He is sitting in a town called Ritzville right now in need of a front spindle and hub assembly. Wheel bearings too of course.

Jim can handle wrenching duties and I'm sure he has the needed tools. But he needs PARTS!!!

If you can help or can suggest someone who can let me know ASAP.

THANKS,

Mark...
