Title says it all.

I've seen issues where there is knuckle failure due to the knuckle studs loosening up over time, shearing and then causing bigger problem. I have a solution where I will re-torque my knuckle stud nuts daily, which is fine for someone who's pretty observant of such practices. However, I was thinking that Nordlocks might be a better solution to this and might be a good way to prevent this failure for those of us that aren't so... Observant of this procedure.

Is there a reason these shouldn't be used?

As long as there is enough room - those can be quite thick depending upon the size. Make certain you get the absolute correct size on those or they cannot work as intended. There should be metric sizes available - check the dimensions too since they require a certain minimum to seat properly against the metal below them.

Just be forewarned - it does take a lot to break those loose. The original equipment split washers weren't very good in my opion, these would work a lot better but they are not cheap by any means.

The only thing I can see it affecting is the torque values, you might have to increase the torque to get the same results as the factory setup. I'm still a fan of medium strength Loctite where the stud threads into the housing and low strength for the nut onto the stud.

I believe Nordlock has their own take on torque specs - study their install instructions.

Torque guidelines per different grades -

These things are intended to be chosen specifically ,not just a random "whatever fits" deal - they must be the right type for the job to work. I know, sounds complicated for a lousy lock washer, but these are a very specialty type of fastener - like ARP studs and must match the application or they will fail. I'd almost recommend changing out the stock studs as well to a higher grade set, but there are limits on what the casting itself can withstand. If your studs are in very good condition I'd imagine with the right washer they should work as designed - it's getting them to fit inside the given space that will determine what can be used.

If you contact them, they will send samples far as I know. Might want to start there, or at least measure the given area first and try to get a sample in that size range. They are designed to fit a certain way against the bolt/stud - that part is very important.

Most of the issue with knuckle studs is they stretch. I don’t see nordlocks helping.

I run arp studs with top lock nuts on my wheeler. I haven’t had a problem in the last 10 years.
