Hello all. I was sent over to this forum by some guys over at Colorado4x4.org. Cool bunch there, looks like a cool bunch here as well! I'm currently in SoCal and moving to CO Springs next month. Going to ditch my current ride, a 12 second Dakota R/T for a Land Cruiser. Looking at the 80 series, which is why I'm here... I found an 80 series, pretty well fixed up I think, with front/rear electric lockers...being sold by a company in CO who does work on them.

I think what they are asking for it is high...as do others. On the other hand, it is in great shape, and fixed up nicely. Please read the write up, check out my link for pix I have on it, and let me know your thoughts/feelings on what it is really worth, or whatelse I should try to get thrown in...besides lube!

"What we have here is a 1994 FJ80. Comes equipped with factory front and rear lockers. Leather interior. 3rd Row Seating Powersteering. 4 wheel disc brakes with anti-lock. Power mirrors. Sun roof. AM/FM/CD. Fully loaded. This cruiser spent its life at the mall and grocery store. We transformed this cruiser to a GO ANYWHERE FJ80. We have installed an ARB bullbar, Warn XD9500 winch, Safari snorkel, PIAA lights, Man-A-Fre 4" lift kit, Procomp wheels and 315/75/R16 tires, Winderness roof rack (rack accessories (lights, ax, shovel, ax and shovel mounts, ski rack) not included). We have also completed a complete service to include major tune-up, new fan belts, oil and filter, front and rear axles have been changed, transfer case and transmission have been serviced. Front and rear brakes have been replaced along with new rotors. Knuckle seals and birfields have been serviced. We have installed a new custom exhaust with a flow thru convertor along with 2 new 02 sensors. EGR valve and temp sensor have been replaced. We have tested our work on Chinamen's Gulch as can be seen in some of the photos. The lift kit and tire combination performed outstanding making the obstacles seem like a drive to the mall. 165,000 miles. This cruiser can be yours for $19,900 OBO. Updated 04/07/2006."

Too much money for that. The ARB, Front Axle service, winch etc are nice. Steel needs sliders. You could get a 94 with lockers without that for under $10K if you look hard and add all that stuff and still be cheaper.

I'd pass.

Seems awfully high $$$ just my .02

Kind of what I figured...I mean, adding it all up, looks like they put a good amount of $$ in it...what do you think would be a fair price? $15K with all of that stuff?

Thanks.

Sam

A> welcome :flipoff2:

B> there are recent threads on "what's it worth" but for my reference point:

1996 purchased March 2005, $11k in TX
115k, factory lockers, otherwise 100% stock

see .sig for the additions, figger about $4k worst case....

fer the mileage, and considering prices of these non-so-fuel-efficient rigs is falling like CO snow, the price sounds like more than I'd spend....key will be to find a similar stock rig for a price point, research the new-value of the addons, and evaluate your own mechanical skillz for the maintenance items.

and, to repeat, welcome :flipoff2:

Agreed. What do you feel is a fair price considering mods/upkeep?

WOW:eek:

Its not everyday that your first 3 replies come from 2 mods and the admin.:D

And all 3 agree.

I think :censor: is about to freeze over...........lol

Yeah, I hear ya. Seems like these rigs are falling between 9K and 12K somewhere depending on condition/mileage. I figured with the 4" lift, rims/tires, ARB, roof rack, maintenance, etc, etc, they have around 5 or 6k in it...could be wrong...but seems about right.

I'll get my jacket. LMAO!

Wow - you heard from three of the best. You are truely blessed. Only better if the parts shaman had chimed in as well.

Rough, rough of the top of my head $5,000 in extras (bumper, rack, winch, etc>). The cruiser itself, even with all the maintenance and miles is in the $8-9K range at best. Go from there.

OK...then of course there is the install fees..."priceless" to me, because if my wife sees me ripping apart another car, she will kill me. :censor: I had the Dakota apart 2 months doing the heads/cam/headers, etc.

$5K only? Including rims/tires/lift??? Snorkle too! :) I know...it is way too much. But I think if I can talk them down 4K, it will be more worth it. :bounce::bounce2:

Next question....what are you guys/gals seeing in mileage from these engines before they are needing to be rebuilt? I know my 360ci Dodge motor would never make it to 100K, let alone what these 'yotas are known for.

mileage:

250-300k....maintenance does wonders for these...

that was $8k rig + $5k accessories for $13k total :D

reference: my OME lift install took a Sat morning (plus caster bushings), ARB/winch install took one evening, sliders will be another evening (SOON, I hope...hint hint), snorkle is IMO a conversation-only item, balance is wiring and fluid type stuff that's standard maintenance....knuckle service is the only other major, and will take you 2-4 hours for one side, and WAY less for the other (experience does wonders)

hope those O2 sensors are Toy-OEM...the P0420 code is rumor'd to not like aftermarket ;)

Brentbba, you should know better than to call ME, of all people, "experienced" with the 80-series...
now, ask me about a buggyized FJ40, and I'm all over it :flipoff2:

From the denvercragslist are the following rigs. Don't think any have lockers, but most people don't know what front and rear lockers are and usually you well see them for the same price.

http://denver.craigslist.org/car/151379386.html

http://denver.craigslist.org/car/151271562.html

You also might consider a Lexus LX450 which is really the same rig and uses all the same parts procurred from out local (to this site) Toyota Parts manager at a healthy discount. You will notice thats what I ended up with. I wanted the best 80 or LX450 that I could get my hands on with lockers.

Nice...I'll keep my eye out for others while I'm trying to talk these guys off their high horse. BTW, it is Rocky Mountain Cruisers who is selling this thing. Anything I should know about them?

Thanks guys! Looks like I'll be searching for a different Cruiser!

I thought that looked familiar. I think that truck belongs to Nick the son of RMC's owner Ron. Both are friends of mine and fellow local club members. They specialize in FJ40 restorations and they are one of the best in that. They dabble in 80's. Good people, and it's a nice truck, it did awesome at Chinamons Gulch.

The value of the truck did go up in my mind about $1000 based on who owns it, but since they are friends I will refrain from any other price discussions.

Those items are all bolt-on, so the ripping apart is minimal. The snorkel is drill-through and then bolt-on, so it's a little more intense, but it's not a cam.

That still only gets you to what, 15.9? For a 13k rig?

I'm at 143k and change, so no real durability test here. Our current Have a look at our current Rig of the Week stuck to the top -- that's a 221k mile truck, and there are a lot here with that many miles and more.

Oh, and welcome! :flipoff2:

Well, if good people own it, I will still consider...but I will be using the OBO clause in the price discussion!
