What's the code for the base model? high-end? in-between?

Why, you ask? I'm making my truck look like a base model. I have my reasons.

Anyway, I just want to know what the differences are between the different trim codes, which one indicates base model, etc.... If any of you guys know, please post up.

TIA

I'm no expert, but GX almost always came with the non-turbo 1HZ motor (and 5spd), whereas the VX and VX Limited came with 1HD-T.

VX Limited came with AT and the console cooler/freezer, too.

VX usually came with AT, but could have had one with MT.

HTH's!

AFAIK in the UK, all GXs are TDs, and all VXs are (4.5) petrol (which doesn't exactly answer your question, I know ;) )

Okay these one I know , I am the owner of a Toyota fzj 80 Called over here in South America toyota "Autana" it comes with standard equipment like ....... absolutely nothing!!! mine has the 4.5 petrol engine carburated , no AC , no power windows , ,Front row seat is well like an old pick up seat , no tachometer, no voltmeter, no clock , the dash is diferent from the Vx and the Gx , comes with a 5 Speed standard trans , also the 4WD is not electric!! , also comes with horizontal tail gate, no rear defog , no rear wiper, the rear windows in the trunk are one pice , no fender flares , no full floating axel in the rear, no disk breakes on the rear , spare tire comes under the truck, the front lights I like mine these are the 2 square lights per corner and mine was made in Venezula I think that is all about the basic model. Japan Basic model is call the "G" model and it es the same as above but with vertical tailgate and the spare tire goes in the bumper , The "VX" is a well equiped truck, the motor is the same 4.5 , the lights are the same as the Lexus 450 , comes with fender flares, horizontal tail gate , individual Front seats but no leather , tachometer voltmeter, the dash has more buttons for the AC and different possitions for the air to flow , the basic model has the cable system , ajjajaaj forgot that little detail, the 4WD is electric , rear seat face towards the front of the car and not like the basic that are facing each other , windows for the 3rd row , power windows , and doors upholtery is very diferent more luxurius , in the basic there is plain , just the handle to open an arm rest and the window latch, full floating rear axel disk rear brake , rear defog and rear wiper , it has a very good fridge in the middle of the front seats , it also made in Venezuela, the "GX" is the Japan fully equiped 80s is the same as the "VX' but the front fender is cromed and has the 2 square lights per unit also the rear tale gate is vertical, and has the tire carrier , beacuse where the spare tire goes int he basic model the 'GX' has the Second Fuel tank , in the interior does not have the fridge (intead of the fridge it has a normal console)but is has the AC to the 3rd row seats , also comes with the 2nd tank fuel gauge and altimeter the rest is like the VX (axel, flares...etc) the VX also has a a control for the antena to lowered or rised , of course the basic doesent have that !!!.

and I hope that help you guys!.
Thanks

PS sorry for the crapy english!!:whoops:

In the middle east we had the GXR and the VXR!

GXR was the base end and the VXR was the high end!

I have a VX, its a 4.2td. Comes with full leather electric pack, air con, about same spec as most USA ones. Also most is not all VX's are auto.

The GX does not get the leather. Over most of the GX's are manual.

Axle lockers standard on all UK spec ones, either spec can be petrol or diesel depending on age.

We do get a lot of VX Ltd over (JDM imports) most do not have lockers of the 3rd row of seats. But most have a factory fitted rear wheel carrier and a fridge in the cubby box. These can be either petrol or diesel.

Here in Australia I have either seen, Driven or owned the following (I worked in a Toyota Dealer for 8 Years)

DX - 1HZ Diesel base model. Vinyl Seats & floor, Bucket and 3/4 Seats in front (no console) Barn Doors, No Flares, Wind up windows, crappy radio, skinny wheels etc etc also avail in 1fz petrol

GX - similar to above, but with carpet floor, fabric seats, two piece tailgate. These were usually "limited" models only avail at certain times and depending on what toyota where offering at the time as to what was included. (ie some had flares or maybe just power windows)

GXL (most popular model)- 1HZ (man trans only - although have seen a few RARE Auto's) 1HD (man or aut) 3f (man or Auto until 1993)1fz man or auto. As above with flares, side moulds, power win, Fabric Seats, CD (after 1995) Wide Wheels, 3rd row seats, two piece tail gate, etc
These also had some some limited models, where they would throw a few extra goodies in, ie sunroof, alloy wheels, velour seats, a cup holder in the dash, colour matched flares etc

VX - sahara - 1hd or Petrol varients Autos only, however I have seen a few early Manuals poking around. All the goodies, fridge, climate control, velour until 1993 then leather seats, Cd Stacker frt and rear diff locks single semi sealed headlights with washers, dual air con etc etc

Any other aussies chime in if i have anything wrong.

I think it's evident from people's responses, but the short answer is: it depends on the market. Toyota uses the same loose definitions for each of the trim levels, but then allows variations in each market under each of those trim levels. This isn't exclusive to the 80 series, it's been common practice since the early 80s. An example: my Venezuela-spec 1984 FJ60, which had "G" trim badges on the front fenders, did not have a factory heater, just A/C. Canada-spec BJ60s of the same vintage, also identified as a "G" trim level, did not have A/C, just a heater.

So depending on whether you're talking about JDM, World, Australia, Southeast Asia, North Africa, Gulf, Venezuela, Western Europe, Russia or China markets, there will me some degree of variation within the same trim spec.

My advice is to focus on the Australian version of the trim spec, since there is better documentation, no language barrier, and a lot more Aussie board members to assist.

Hope this helps!

Yeah, like my '93, but has the third row and rear AC; this and the fridge are great accesories, much more usefull than lockers on a road car !

Ohh forgot the leather front seats are heated.

I dig the sealed beams! I know, probably not favorable in your part of the world, but we (NA) never got 'em.

I'd love to convert to sealed beams and throw in some 80/100W units... :D
