Noticed a couple of weeks ago that my GPS was not reflecting a major road that may, I'm guessing, be a few years old.

How does the system update?

Truck is a '15 model.

So I have to buy something?

Figures.

Yup. And even then, the map won't be as good as Google Maps or Waze. Why spend a couple hundred $$ or more on Toyota maps when Google Maps are free and always up to date?

Integration. Yes google maps works, but I find it annoying to look at my phone (which admittedly I leave sitting in the cupholder instead of using a phone mount) to see the map instead of the friggin' table-sized screen that's right in front of me.

That said I haven't updated mine and I would most likely install the pretigious society box or another aftermarket hack to mirror my phone to the Nav system than pay $200 for a map update.

I use a vent mount for my iPhone, which puts it close to my line of site. Toyota nav is so crappy that I don’t think it is worth it, even with updated maps. YMMV.

Toyota is finally supporting Apple CarPlay. That gives you Apple Maps, which isn’t as good as Google Maps, but is a step in the right direction. Toyota has announced CarPlay for the 2019 Avalon, Corolla, and RAV4, IIRC. I expect CarPlay will spread across all of Toyota’s range over time.

Does that mean it will be available for our LC’s ?

Toyota hasn’t made an announcement about CarPlay for the LC. I expect that the LC will get CarPlay eventually, but it wouldn’t surprise me if it takes a couple years.
