I'm having some issues with my FJ62. In first gear it has started making a noise of some kind, like a grinding noise. It seems to go away in second and beyond, but it is definitely causing some worry. Tranny fluid seems to be proper in hot, and I tried to check the transfer case but I don't seem to have the right size of socket (bigger than a 24, but smaller than a 27, can't find the exact size). Should I bring this in to the shop?

We took it into torfab and they said it was toast. I was surprised that they didn't have any rebuild options. According to them rebuilders are few and far between. They ended up getting a known good used one and installing one. So far so good!

Shops will say they can't get parts, they don't have the time, and they don't have the knowledge - and they tend to be right. I couldn't find a shop to rebuild a 2000 4Runner (A343) transmission, so I swapped in a used one.
