I been hearing a squeak while driving over small bumps and clunk like metal to metal in the rear of my truck for few weeks now. Its a 95 80 with 120k on it, so far i checked the rear brakes look fine parking brake pads are fine, i took the spare tire out along with the mounting mechanism, I changed all four shock absorbers with OEM and looked at some of the bushings they look somewhat bad but not enough to cause this noise, or can it? Also had a friend jump up and down on rear bumper but could not really hear anythign while the car move up and down while parked. So it seams that the drop of the tire in the pot hole separates something and bangs it back together. I also think the squeak and clunk are two separet sources but anyhow. Can any one please suggest what i need to look at next? thanks in advance

Missing rubber spring pad on the top of the rear springs?

i saw it has like a rubber stop with in the spring is that the piece you refer to?

No. There is a rubber donut that sits on top of each of the rear springs between it and the body. I have heard reports of noises and such if this is missing. It's probably there if you've never removed the springs.

ill have to check and get back to you although i never romoved the springs

My Mates got an 80 cruiser and he had the same thing we tracked it down to the bolts that are in the rear in between the rear seats and the rear doors under the plastic footstep it bolts the body to the chasis

I had the same noises you report (squeaks and metal clunks) and just spent the last month figuring out the culprit (secured, tightened and replaced many things in the process; including the 8 sway bar mounts)

In my case, it was the parking brake shoes rubbing and rattling a bit against the mount/shroud. In the FSM, it instructs you to apply high temp grease in a few spots between the brake shoes and the the mount.

I realize you said the brake shoes are ok, but is there play in your e-brake handle (inside the truck) or are the bellcranks seized in the actuated position (at the rear wheels)? This indicates that there's room for the shoes to rattle around in there.

Or, I'm way off.

i actully took the rotors off the back wheels i figred sothing was loose in there and one of the spring clips was off but still had the same noises afterwards but at least i corrected that, this sounds more like what the was said above the bolts to the body but ill have to check on that once it stops raining here thanks for the input i will post if i find the problem, there is a lil play from the hadle for e brake inside is there any way to adjust this? i know there is that spindle in between the shoes that can be reached thru the hole on the rotor am i on the right track?

I found clicking and clanking from the inside lower tailgate. the latches were fliping and flopping, i wedged foam in between the door and the latch relay rods.

old models?

This it's the old model sway bar rear braket .. I found it very very noisy at the end of it's life ..

Discovered my PS rear swaybar link had lost the lower bolt on one of my first wheeling trips. On its way out, the bolt had wallowed the hole in the bracket and buggered the first couple of threads. So even with a new locktited bolt in there, it'll make noise when I hit a speedbump or the like.
I minor annoyance at best. Someday I'll replace the bracket (or lose the swaybar altogether).

I had the exact same problem, could not replicate it by jumping on the back...had to be driving...what I found it to be was where the shock mounts to the body, those bolts were loose...mine were so bad the bolt had all the threads stripped off and I had to get new ones...but the squeak went away.

i have the new style sway bar and just did the shocks all 4 new oem so im sure those bolts are tight i still have to check bolts to body but unfortunatly hasnt stopped raining maybe this weekend i can get to it thanks for replys

I have a similar "bong" noise coming from the rear when going over speed bumps and low speed turns.

The noise cannot be recreated in the driveway by rocking the truck either. Removal of the rear swaybar doesn't eliminate my noise. All suspension bolts are at factory torque.

I haven't eliminated the possibility of the e-brake housing yet.
