No winch, how do you guys get yourself out of the bog?

I have no winch, or hand winch. I also go 4wding alone and if I get stuck, it's really hard to navigate anyone out there to pull me out..

I have seen a dude who cable tied a few milk crate tops together to make a traction pad that folds together nicely. Will this get me out of the s***e most times? What do you guys use?

I have no plans to buy a winch, maybe a hand winch, but would prefer not to because most of the time there are no trees around to winch out on anyway.

Thanks.

If you're ready to get messy, climb out and grab some downed trees (with some good bark left on em) and shove them under your tires to get better purchase.

I don't enter situations with high "stuck" risk unless I'm wheeling with friends, because all my friends have winches...when you're by yourself you have to think
of things that could be potentially hazardous BEFORE you do them.

The old school farmer winch is to get a empty steel wheel rim and a few hundred feet of rope. Jack up one wheel and remove the tyre and install the rim. Fix one end of the rope to the rim and the other to a tree and start spooling the rope onto the rim using the engine. It isn't pretty, but it is cheap and it works.

Whoa.. I wouldn't wanna be around when that pull-pal came flying back at me! Bound to happen to someone but other than that, good piece of kit!

I like the idea of sticking stuff under the tyres, thats what my main 'strategy' has been if I ever get stuck. I also concurr with the 'don't do anything stupid when you're out alone' camp. I'm always mindful of this and will often walk the track where I think it may be dangerous.

Whoa man.. That is OUT THERE!!

Blue cruiser beat me to it, but the all mighty shovel and some creative thinking/ elbow grease can get you out of some pretty bad muck. I keep a collapsible shovel in the back Just in case. Other than that just wheel smart.

What's a bog? :flipoff2:

I've heard it's a lot like what is at the top of Williams Pass in wet years. But I've never been there yet, either.:p

Seriously, if you're that far back in the Outback, best to stick with your buddies around bogs. You're gonna either need them -- or you will be spending a lotta time thinking how much you miss them.

I've been told that they have mosquitoes there, too. True?

hi lift as a winch: YouTube - Hi-Lift as a Winch

chains to drop into the slot on my hi-lift extreme will make it easier,

as will a longer length, so you spend less time re-rigging and more on plain cranking

Thanks man, I'll check that out when I get home and can watch it. So it looks like I can grab some other recovery gear (srtraps/chains n stuff) and use it as a winch..! :) Aswll as use it to chock stuff under the wheels for traction I guess?

i did not have a winch for a long time, a shovel, high lift jack and some bark or branches have gone a long ways in the past. once you get a winch though you will never regret it, even with no trees., sometimes a light pull with a winch anchor is all it takes.
If nothing else, get a high lift and a good shovel.
also a 4 foot piece of expanded metal under a tire or two can work wonders.:hillbilly:

Or get some of the metal tracks that you see on some Aussie expo. Rigs. I'll try and find a pic.
Shovel, rocks, dirt, or anything else you can shove under the tires. A hi lift with the off road base might help in the soft poo poo pee pee mud

Croozer - if you got no trees you can always bury your spare tyre. Its a biatch to do but it does work. I like using a hand winch cause it doesn't break down cause you forgot to service it and you can pull every which way.
Failing that a HiLift, a base plate, a shovel and some good old fashioned thinkin' works wonders. Might just take some time to get out though.
It can take a couple of hours to get out of something that would take 5mins with a mate and a snatch strap.

You could also get some of those MaxxTrax but they're quite spenny.

Cheers

Yeah it can take hours if your out alone. As much as I like to fly solo from time to time, you gotta be fully prepared and not be so ballsy/dumb. I leaned the hard way. But now I have all kinds of recovery gear in case It does happen

I got stuck so bad last summer I had to leave my rig overnight. Next day I jacked up either end with a highlift and put boards under the tires. About a month later I had a winch. I have been stuck 2x since then and never left my rig again, just winched myself out. A winch is worth every penny, especially on an 80. Thats why IH8MUD though.

A mate of mine has a Hi-lift he will sell me for a ctn of beer.
I could pretty well winch out of anything with that you'd think?
Mind you I'm still yet to watch the Youtube vid and could be missing something. Failing that, I can see myself lifting, and plompin' in some logs/boards, whatever I can find at the time. Although this 'sounds' well and good, I don't have the experience some others do. I dunno, is it a sound plan?
