Good Morning,

I'm experiencing difficulty trying to get my FJ60 back up and running. It's an 87 and was desmogged by a previous owner. Recently it's been acting up after sitting for a day or more, as well as when it gets below 40 at night.

After sitting, it would start, but seem to only fire on two or three cylinders, and as it warmed up, the others would join in. The warm up usually took less than a minute with the choke engaged. I could take off the choke and it would take longer, but never more than five minutes. This has been happening for about 5 months. Other than that, no issues.

Drove it Thursday night, went to start it Friday morning and nothing. Frustrated, and not having the voltmeter out of the boxes from a recent move. I did a 'field test' with a helper. The helper turned the key for two revolutions, I held onto the spark plug wire. Nothing happening. I should have been given a nice jolt of electricity, right? I did get a couple of huge jolts however, from the wire going from the coil (may be incorrect part nomenclature) to the distributor.

Am I correct in thinking the problem is in the distributor? Do I need to replace it or are there any fixes I may be able to perform on it? I took the cap off and I do not see any cracks. The metal points are very white, but do not appear to be misshapen, or abnormal other than that.

Any help is, of course, appreciated.

Jon

Howdy! Sounds like you need to replace the cap and rotor. May need a full blown tune up, but the white stuff has got to go. You may be able to knock it off with a long screw driver or scribe as a temporary fix. I have done that a lot of times when I don't have parts handy. John

Well hot dog, that might be it?

I'll head down and pick up a cap right now.. Any brands to be aware of and avoid?

Howdy! Just about anything will work better than what's on there now. OEM is best, but if you go to a parts house, get the high priced upgrade, don't go for the cheapest one available. I would try a NAPA if you can. John

Inkpot,

Thanks a lot for your help. I'm certain it saved me money, as I was looking into replacing the entire distributor.

The new cap and rotor made all the difference. The 60 hadn't been started in two days and she started up on the first turn of the key. It is a delightfully easy fix as well. If anyone else is experiencing similar problems.. this is the answer.

I looked through the receipts and service records on the rig.. Nothing has ever been done to the dizzy.. 207xxx miles isn't too bad.

Thanks again,

Jon
