so i am driving my brother-in-laws 87' 60 until i can find a new cruiser for a dd and today while driving it bucked real bad and while i was in 4th gear it seemed as though no matter how much gas i gave it nothing happened. i was cruising about 35mph and it seemed like it wouldn't go any faster. My first thought was gas related. maybe fuel pump. Thoughts?

If its fuel delivery it should do it in all gears at the same rpm. All the same it is very inexpensive and quick to change out the fuel filter.
When the timing is off it will have trouble keeping up with the gas as you increase speed and would cause something like this but again it would be the same in each gear

I'm no expert but check for vacuum leaks at the intake. spray some ether in that area while it's running. If the RPMs go up then you may have a leak causing it to buck.

Its sounds timing related. Are you sure it only does it in 4th gear? Thats werid...

I'll add there is a possibility of a restriction in the exhaust. This can be confirmed by measuring a fall in engine vacuum as RPM's increase. Also, the exhaust should never have more than 1/2# pound of pressure.
Culprits are a defective/failed converter, loose baffles in the muffler, banana up the tailpipe!

well apparently it happens in all gears not just the 4th. i think its fuel related. i ordered a fuel filter from toyota today and i'll slap it on in the morning. but when i got home today from getting the kids at school i turned the engine off and it sputtered after it was off. now i have owned cruisers for the last 6 years and none of them ever did that. What would cause a sputter like that when i turn the ignition off.

Sorry to question your experience, but have you ever experienced a slipping clutch where the motor revs but the truck dosen't accelerate?
Just trying to eliminate the simple stuff!
A slipping clutch, restricted fuel or restricted exhaust can manifest only in 4th.... In 4th you hold the loud pedal down further and longer than the other gears, so don't overlook these possibilities.
I think timing would show up in all gears, even revving in neutral if it's that far off. Still be good to throw a gun on it to eliminate the possibility.

Sputtering with the engine off is probably "dieseling," which in my experience is related to timing issues.
The bucking and surging, if in all gears and at 1200-1500 RPMs, is most likely an EGR valve issue or fuel cut solenoid.
Mine was doing it really bad until I removed and cleaned the EGR valve- some carb cleaner did wonders.
What are you looking for as a daily driver? What's wrong with Alice?
Check that your carbon canister is venting.

add an engine miss-fire to the probable list. Is she sounding different at the tail pipe when the power is down?
"Dieseling" can be from a hot spot in the combustion chambers, idle adjusted too high, fuel stop solenoid not functioning.
Had there been any recent work or adjustments before you started having these problems?
