We'll, seeing as we wont be getting the official next-generation Toyota branded Land Cruiser in the US... What does everyone think of the Tundra so far?

Personally, I am a big fan and as long as the performance numbers are comparable to the competition, hope to be picking one up by the second production year at least to be my new daily (My 80 is currently my daily, yikes).

I typically don't care for the look of new vehicles until they have 2-3 yrs to grow on me. I'm expecting the same from the 4th Gen Tundra. Not a fan of the the aesthetics in their current form, frankly the late first and 2nd Gen Tundras are the best looking, and the 2nd Gen interiors were king. If that front end were 4-6" higher, and it wasn't trying so hard to look like a Tacoma that grew up into a Silverado, I'd like it more.

Of course, no power numbers yet. And the thing that always is an issue with Toyota trucks... please give us better fuel economy.
 
It looks like a beast! What's the biggest engine nowadays?

I think aesthetically, all future generations of Toyota trucks & SUVs will suffer from looking too much like the other, now that they are all going to be sharing the TNGA frame across all body on frame models.

I miss my 03 SR5 with the 4.7L but aside from it's size, my 08 SR5 with the 5.7L was arguably the better vehicle in every respect.

I agree, the front end is much too low and is going to make modifying a pain. Also, this being the TRD Pro, as always the tires are far too small for their top of the line option.

Most of the Youtube channels / "professional speculators" seem to believe the non-hybrid TT V6 will see around 24mpg combined and the hybrid optioned TT V6 will get about 30mpg combined.
 
I need to add it has too many styling cues from other makes, especially the plastic doodads on the hood ala GM. But then Toyota has pretty much missed on everything lately styling wise. I do kinda like the new Camry as long as it's the fully optioned version.

2 doors down from me the millennial couple have a current gen Tacoma and a... RAV4 TRD Pro... 🤦
 
Looks terrible to me, i'm sure they will sell a ton of them though.

I completely agree with Pitch, I disliked virtually everything when it was new and they grow on you over the years. One vehicle that has not grown on me at all is the new tacomas, and this looks like one of those mixed with a new silverado. Everything is getting bigger, wider and taller, and I don't care for that.

without bumping the numbers up... I have a hard time understanding why anyone would buy a tundra when the F150 beats it in nearly every catagory

I know my reasons behind not buying a ford are mostly related to the obscene replacement parts cost. Ford changed their business model about 15 years ago from making standardized parts to making each trim level unique so that it would not be profitable for aftermarket parts companies to make replacement parts. That would be fine, but when ford charges $600 in parts to do front rotors and pads because they have no competition, that kills the cost of ownership. Probably doesn't matter to people who buy new and sell before the warranty is up, but it matters to me.

For what it's worth, me being in the youngest possible category for a millennial (1996), I'm not a fan of the Tacoma's either, because of the length of the front end primarily. Will have to see what this looks like from the side, but as long as it's more proportional to the rest of the body I can get behind it.

I'm with you there. My father has a 2019 F150 Eco-Boost and while it is a great truck generally speaking, anytime something goes wrong (which is more often than it should for a two year old truck) he has hell fighting with the Ford dealerships regarding lead times on fixing things, parts costs, and just general employee attitudes. Whereas I have never had any issues at the Toyota dealers with my vehicles.

i guess i didn't realize there was such a huge shift. The superduty with the 7.3L powerstroke has just shy of 200k miles and it's been great.

My guess is that the new Tundra will be better or at least equal to the current F150, in addition to Toyota reliability. I know it's an unproven platform, but Toyota sells so many vehicles on that premise, that it's hard to see them giving that up.
 
Looks like a GMC to me. I miss good ol fashioned square-ish steel pickups. They all look like angular plastic cladded abominations now.

When the fifth gen 4Runner came out my wife was didn't like the front end of the TRDs. Years later when we bought one she didn't want a limited that the front end reminds her of her 04 and liked the TRDs. I was iffy on the fifth gear but admit I would rather drive one verses the Highlander which was the other option. Can never see buying another truck unless possibly a 70 series import. My daughter have to have a White Tacoma. Just over a year of owning one it got traded in for a white 4Runner. For tired of carry stuff like groceries in the open bed of a pickup. Large SUV and trailer work far better than a pickup.
 
Working at the dealerships we have heard there are going to be 2 power plants available, the twin-turbo V6 and a hybrid variant of the Tundra. The hybrid variant is rumored to have the towing capacity of a 3/4 ton Chevy, Dodge, and Ford's.

Also, if you look at the front ends of the 4Runner and Tacoma there are some design similarities mainly in the grill designs.

My need for a truck comes mainly from a hunting background. Packing for a week of hunting with a big cabin tent, lots of coolers, etc. In general, I much prefer the utility of an SUV, but I'm not crazy about putting animal remains inside of an SUV. My 08 Tundra was the best overall vehicle, I've ever owned, and I miss the utility of having a truck bed for larger items and not needing to tow a trailer when moving, bringing appliances, lumber, etc. It's also easier with the boat, having somewhere to put all of the wet tubes, wakeboards, yada yada. That said though, driving a Tundra for 8 years, I feel very claustrophobic in all Tacoma's and would never personally own one.

The 4Runner is too small for my general needs, the Sequoia just doesn't do it for me, and the 300 Series LC not being available to us, the Tundra is the only vehicle that will really fit most of my needs. I love my 80 dearly, but there is a lot I miss about owning a modern full size truck.
