Jerry,

Are you going to re-hab those axles or install something different?

My tailgate was badly dented, but not rusted at all. The bodyshop did wonders with it. (now if they could have painted it the correct color.....)

That tailgate looks great, hope I can do something with mine, its a mess.

My mistake...the axles are just fine, I'm replacing them and the leaf springs with something else...:grinpimp:

And you're not going to tell??

There are rumors/ideas/dreams of putting my "extra" 80 axles (non e-lockers) with ARB's, 4.88's and Longfields under it, triangulated 4-link rear, 3-link w/panhard up front, air bags, running on 37's but who knows if the frame comes back with massive holes, weak spots and isn't worth saving.

I can't imagine that's the case but it does happen, right?

I dropped it off this morning at the blaster and we will see what turns out. He will leave the frame raw, put an epoxy primer on the body parts. He said he'd have it done by Friday, then I'll know where I'm really going with it.

I've got to take things one step at a time at this point...:hhmm:

And if ya got no room for those old axles one day i might know someone that does....

Met Mark (owner) who had a beard, don't see him doing the blasting though. Had a younger guy inside painting, another I didn't meet, not much of a beard.

Seemed like a good guy, still way more than I expected but I guess I didn't think about the work going into the bed. He will epoxy prime all but the frame for me even though it will take more effort to clean off to do repairs, he felt its best since it will be stored outside until I work on the various parts.

So, its there and I hope to see it by the end of the week...

So, got the parts back Sat, fresh from the blaster. Thanks to Ramon and Johnny for dropping by to help with the unloading.

Wound up being pretty extensive work, they did a very nice job of getting inside the frame rails and cleaning up all the rust. They put 8 gal of epoxy primer on all but the frame, covering very well. I requested a strong coating since it would be stored outside until I got to each piece for repair. No need to get it blasted again because I'm slow, allowing rust to re-form. Total cost, $1800...ouch!

The hard part was knowing I'm spending this just to find out how good/bad things are when I could have easily just closed my eyes to any issues, thrown some putty at it and repainted it for less, wheeled the crap out of it until something failed. I guess I'm growing up a bit and wanting to do things "right".

Analysis...Headache rack is golden but for having to remove the grate. Thats the best of the good, now for the challenging parts. First up, the windshield frame. Luckily, I've got a replacement already so this will be used for an experiment. The tub is in relatively good shape. Clearly it has had previous repairs, done reasonably and it needs repairs in a few spots...

Next up, the tailgate. Major problems that I'm not sure how to even approach fixing it. This runs all along, under the lip...

Next post includes the bed and frame...

Now, for the bed. Its a mess also. The sides and wheel humps are the best, the floor of the bed has to go. My solution will probably be the easy route...wood planks like I did for the trailer. Here are the pics...

How/where am I going to source these tie down hooks. Most are gone, those remaining look like this...

On to the finale, the frame. Good and bad. The front half is in fairly good shape. The back half is in fairly bad shape. Clean enough to see the VIN # on the frame...

A bit of notching to accommodate the FJ60 power steering pump clearance...

Not great but repairable for sure...

It looks like you are going to be busy for a while. Your patience will be tested Grasshopper :)

This tie down is all sheet metal, yes?

Might want to see what Awlteq can do for you.

You got your hands full with this one.

Hey Jerry! I just read through the entire thread, very interesting stuff going on here! What's the status of the 45 now? I'm curious if and how you were able to rescue the frame. Beautiful engine, garage, and welder, BTW! Your experience makes me wonder how deep I want to go with my newly acquired 40. It runs well and looks better than "good enough for wheeling".

It's sitting in a storage unit awaiting my focus. Ramon has the engine running and installed in his 40, I'm thankful he could put it to good use.

As of today, I have the 6.2l and tranny Johnny pulled from the CCUV truck planned as the power plant, the unlocked 80 axles that are currently on my 80 (awaiting swap of locked axles I have sitting in my garage) will get re-geared and ARB air-lockers underneath, the frame has been saved from rear cab-mounts forward, fabricate new rear section to accommodate 4-link, 3-link front but...the biggest question is all the rust repair and how best to deal with it, in particular, the bed. I've got the cab forward covered with a recent acquisition of a solid hood (thanks RK). I may regret not getting in on the Awlteq thing or other bed options, all over $3.5k options, a number I'm sure I'll surpass in time trying to fix/repair/modify the one I have the tail gate being the most challenging aspect.

All of this fantasy build is waiting on finishing my 80, swapping the freshly rebuilt/re-geared/Longfield/Aisin hub, factory e-lockers, swapping the rebuilt/Marlin gear/viscous coupler removed transfer case (not complete), upgrade upper/lower control arms, finishing my rear swingouts this weekend which will allow me to get focused on the t-case work. What a can of worms I've created for myself...:worms::bang:

Regarding your new 40, it all depends on what you want from it. Enjoy it, do some preventative maintanence and get to know it for a while. Identify mechanical issues that may need addressing, look for rust and document so you can make a task list, something I didn't do. If I were in your shoes, I'd keep it stock other than some 33 X 9.50's, consider upgrading axle components (re-gear/aussie/ARB air lockers), upgrade music/GPS/CB/Ham electronics and drive the crap out of it.

In the event you find rust such that it needs immediate addressing, the engine has a significant issue or find safety issues, AND have the extra space, extra time and extra truckload of $$$$, consider doing a frame-off but don't lie to yourself that it will only take a couple weeks/months/years. There are no short cuts, if you want it done fast, it takes loads of cash, if you do it yourself to save cash, it takes loads of time, trust me on this...

Do you have any use for that rear bumper (if you still have it)?

And, what sandblaster guy did you use?

Thanks

Still have it, no use, extremely stout, make me an offer and its yours.

A-1 Sandblasting, Darin gave me referral, I think Ramon used him also. Good work, fair price, kind of unique shop...
