Newbie want to build an expedition rig

Hi guys Im new here. I live in Phoenix Az. I recently bought my first rig this year. I have no real desire to do rockcrawling. I want to do expedition type stuff. I bought a 92 3FE before I knew there were any diffrences between 91 thru 97 rigs.

So my questions is two fold. One, is the 92 a sufficeint rig for expedition work, or would I be better off with a newer model? And two is there any expidition type clubs in the US? I have lived in South America and would love to do that type of adventure driving.

I'm guessing my best bet is going to be Baja Mexico and beyond to get the conditions i'm looking for.

Can you shed any light?

There is nothing wrong with your rig for expedition work. Sure there may be better rigs out there but there is nothing better than the one you own. Just get out there and do it.

Make sure it is reliable first then start working on upgrading it to suit your requirements.

One thing you want to keep in mind for expedition vehicles is the KISS principle (keep it simple stupid). Also stock is generally better as finding a replacement part for someones extra strong super special widgit in small town Mexico is not going to happen and if you've modified your truck to only use said widgit then you are going to be waiting or modifying even more.

If you can afford the newer model it has a better engine (1FZ FE). Probably uses the same amount of fuel as the old 3FE but with much more power.
The later models had bigger brakes and lockers.

But as a start up vehicle the 92 model will be fine.

I know the FZ has more power than the 3FE, But isnt the up keep much easier with the 3FE?

What ype of Expeditions are you planning on?

Your 80 series will be just fine.

interesting that you are asking about the need for newer vehicle.
given that many would say the older "technology" the better (cuz it's simpler). Of course, an older truck may have a much higher mileage on it, which is not a good thing for exped. Certainly, an FJ80 would be fine. No worries! Might be better than the FZJ, and yes the 3FE should be fine. Power should not be a big deal if you're not in a hurry.

(As an aside, and not intended to worry you, but as a comment for other folks, I would add that much as I love my 80, and if I didn't have an 80 already -and maybe even then- I might look at a 60 if I were to do a serious 'round the world trip... And I sure as heck would try to find a Diesel one... Don't underestimate how much easier it is to find Diesel fuel over gas (and esp unleaded for that matter) in out of the way places in 3rd world countries from what I've seen and read)
