I just bought a 1978 FJ40 from the father of a board member (thanks Ron). He actually told me abouth IH8MUD. It's been a long time since I worked on my car but after reading here I've decided to jump right in.
The main initial problem is no parking brake. I tried ajustment without luck so I ordered a e-brake kit from SOR. Read up all over the forums. Everything has gone OK until today. I actually found the major problem which was the clip holding the e-brake cable i was missing the the cable could slide partially out. There was no pooling of oil in the drum but there was a lot of oily dirt. Also there wasn't much oil in the trasfer case and what was there was very dark so I'm not sure if there was oil leaking or not. The outside was dirty but dry. My problem I'm stuck with now is I can't figure out how to get the rear transfer seal out of the speedo housing. Also, while I was trying a little prying with a screwdriver I could see a little spring inside the speedo housing around the output shaft which came out easily. What is this? I couldn't find that piece on any diagram I've seen.
So:
Picture 1 - e-brake before I started, any tips on cleaning the undercarriage ( i tried carwash sprayer)

Picture 2 e-brake interior

Picture 3- spring around transfer output shaft ( came from inside speedo housing) what is this? and how do I get that oil seal out?

put a sprinkler under the car for a day and it will soften the mud.

the spring is part of the seal, and you need a seal puller to remove the seal. local auto parts store should have one for cheap money.

Hi All:

X2 what "CruiserBrett" wrote.

Good luck!

You can use a screwdriver to pry out the seal. Just work it around the ID and it will come out.

Thanks for the responses. I'm already learning a lot on the forum. My wife already thinks I'm completely obsessed and I'm just getting started!:)

x2 on both those guys. I'm doing the same thing currently. I pulled the seal with a J shaped peice of metal from an after market battery holder, then brought the new seal home with a PVC cap I got at ACE for like $0.39

Something like this :hillbilly:

Quite seriously.....she has no idea how bad you will become. There appears to be no depth to this addiction.

You can also try simple green or oven cleaner to remove the gunk. Spray it on at the car wash and let it soak for a while, then rinse. Try using a paint scraper to get the thick stuff off first.

Check your transmission fluid level, that t-case doesn't look like a serious oil leak so the missing oil might be in the transmission.

You can make the whole job MUCH easier by removing the 4 bolts I circled. This will allow the whole e-brake assembly to come off. Working on a bench is a lot easier than laying on your back on a cold floor! :D

Once the backing plate is removed, you will have better access to the seal. You could also pull the 5 bolts that hold the speedo housing on (after removing the e-brake assembly) This will enable you to get the seal out of the housing super easy. You will need to get a speedo housing gasket though.

Here is a link to the complete procedure of t-case rebuilding. The first page is how to get the e-brake assembly off. : Rebuilding The 3 SP T-Case

This link is the e-brake rebuilding page: Rebuilding the 3 sp T-case: Reassembly Page 4

Good Luck, and Welcome to MUD!

Hi,

You also mention trouble with the cable and the clip that holds it there. Are you talking about the little round clip that holds the cable in the brake housing? I replaced the cable in mine a few weeks ago and had a lot of trouble getting the cable off. I finally cut the end of the cable off and slid it out. When I installed the new one, I didn't have a clip so I took a piece of stiff wire and wrapped it around the cable as a clip. It seems to work well so far. You can clean the housing for yours by dipping it w/o the internal parts in kerosene/diesel/or mineral spirits. Mine looked as dirty as yours but it all got cleaned off with a dip. You want to keep those little clips that go on the ends of the small fasteners that hold the brake shoe together in the housing. You might run into some problem in getting the seal back in as you have to deal with the shaft. I finally used a 2x4 and tapped evenly on both sides to get it in. You don't want to go too far on one side to make it get crooked. Just try to tap evenly on both sides till it feels like it's going to go in evenly. Good luck, ty

Well, i did get the seal puller at autozone for $9.99 and it did the trick getting the seal out nicely. I also did buy a PVC coupler and used that and a rubber mallet to install the new one. I did order a new clip for the E-brake cable since i decided to go ahead and order a speedi sleeve from SOR.

Hook, line and sinker... :flipoff2:

Springover, 38s, Longfields and metal tech fenders within 24 months. If your wife is smart, she'd leave now.

HI,

I would suggest that you Check your brake drum before sleeving. From your pics, the inside of your parking brake looks dry. I don't think you will need one. If you need a sleeve, you'll see/feel a groove where the seal would sit. you would also likely have oil in your drum.

Best regards, ty

p.s. from where you are in Ala., you might want to check out tpi land cruisers in nashville. Good people to deal with and closer than SOR.
