Newbie question

I agree and think that the yellow one is a little over-priced. The hard top is nice, but not worth that much in price increase. I know that the snow is falling and there is reason to get out on the trails, but patience is your friend.

Also, do as much research as you can in the mean-time. The later years are more desirable than the earlier models.

Read the FAQs and the Technical links on the mods that you'd like. It will help you decide if the mods are best for your desired application. Again, good luck with finding the right $$$ pit

No kidding rjcruiser I used to live up in Leadville Colorado (2 miles high) and we were/are huge fans of wheelin in the snow!!! My old boss at the garage used to get pissed off at us when we would call in the morning and tell him that we are stuck in the snow way up on the mountain and can't make it in.

What do you think is a fair price on that yellow 40?

I don't think that price is really all that bad. I like 327, good little engines with a lot of potential. I've heard some stories of people getting one they thought had a 327, (p.o. said) and ending up with a 302 or something.

Figure out the story on the engine, rebuilt?, miles?, really a 327?

And at least the body doesn't appear rusted out.

If you find a good candidate FJ40 to go look at, post up and ask Rising Sun if anyone would be willing to go along and take a look with you. Lots of experience there to tap into. I'm sure a member will take the time to help you out. Lots of things to look for on an old cruiser. Good luck!

That is exactly right it is a total "the PO said" he doesn't know actual miles and probably doesn't know for sure if it is a true 327 or not but that is no matter. I am also a Corvette owner/enthusiast and can easily check the #pad on the block against my books to verify that question. He did say that it does have a new or newer edelbrock manifold and carb on it.

He also told me that bedsides the rust in the barn doors there is a little up by the front turn signals and then some in the pan by the roll bar mounts. Claimed that the frame is original paint and good condition and not rusted through or anything.

My only dilemma is that of course he also told me he has a potential buyer in Idaho that is suppose to call him tomorrow and after seeing more pictures of it and will probably buy it sight on seen so if I really want it I would have to look at it and make a decision before tomorrow afternoon. Like I have never heard a story like that before but who knows...

Also all the work V8 conv, lift etc was supposedly professionally done.

Very true. Mine was supposed to be a 327 and turned out to be a 305

The green one does seem to be a more fair price. As far as the rust, if you're just looking for a fun off-road rig, I wouldn't worry about it. All cruisers have rust....unless you find one that has had a frame-off resto and are willing to pay $18k or up. From your prior posts....I don't think that is what you want. As long as the frame is good, you should be fine.

If you wanted to repair some of the spots, the fenders are easy to replace as well as the barn doors.... a little pricy, but you should be able to find all for around $750. The tub can be patched with some steal plates underneath and coated.....just make sure that the roll-bar is solid. Hate to have that thing rip-off when you're going upside down. Also, the hard-top looks to be in good shape and in cold weather, that can be a very nice thing.

As far as the owner trying to get you to buy it quickly, he might be telling the truth, he might not be. I've always found that when buying a used car, time is your friend. If this one doesn't work out, there will always be another. Just look at this post, the red one at the top was what you thought would be a good candidate and you've already found a couple more....but I do think that $5k if everything the PO is saying is true, seems to be a good deal.
