Hey guys...I don't have a CB in the 4-runner right now. Pappy mentioned in another post that CB's are important, so I'll be getting one soon. I also have 3 extra seats in the 4-runner for this trip, so if anyone wants to ride I have room. It'll be a blast no matter what.
The CB is the standard for trail communication. Several of the group have gotten into HAM radios as well but it's considered an additional tool at this point. If you don't have a CB, it's not a big deal. We'll just make sure you're stuck somewhere in the middle of the train.
OK, here's day deal; I still think I'm going; but we do have drywall to hang. So, I may have to get my toes wet, and head back home. If my black taco ain't there by 5after, well, we'll just have to meet up at the next run. Thanks, Ron
The run went pretty well. Despite not wanting to go on Paliza, we spent the majority of our day on Paliza. It wasn't too bad though, for the wimp in the Hundy. I only had one big rock under the truck and my left running board only got a small kink. I think I counted 12 trucks. I'll do my best to remember them:
Evan and his brother in law Chris (80)
Keith, Han, baby, sister, nephew (80)
Jon (4 Runner)
Leni (4 Runner)
Lawrences (White diesel Troopy)
Barry (TRD Tacoma)
Ahlens (100)
Jared and girlfriend(Wife?) (75)
Brian/Daisy (80)
John (Sl33p3), wife and baby (80)
Andrew ('92 PU)
Alis (80)
Guy showed up at the north portal to introduce himself and show off his red 40 but did not accompany us on the run.
Sy brought Paul as well so he could tag along and I think he rode with Jon most of the time.
I don't recall anybody getting stuck enough that they needed help getting out. We went east on 266 from Paliza CG. It eventually turned north and then connected up to the Paliza trail. We stopped for lunch right after that and played in the snow. The snow started getting pretty deep (~18") as 266 descended down into Paliza Canyon and I think Evan was breaking trail at that point. After lunch, we attempted to head up the canyon to connect to a road that is shown on the map as going west from a gate and connecting to FS 10. But the going was getting a little tough and we were looking for an unknown road. So we turned around and then took Paliza trail all the way back to the campground. We took off chains and aired up about 4:30 and were back on pavement before the sun went down.
We never came across the creek crossing I remember where I seriously dragged the rear bumper of my 60, nor did we ever get to the big tank traps.
Most of my pictures are of kids sledding down the hill. I'll try to post a few soon. Hopefully a few others got some other shots.
The Franklin's had a GREAT time! We're really glad we could make it out. What a great group of folks! We're looking forward to doing it again. Great fun in a deboarded stock 80, perfect weather, good times for everyone!
Had a great time out in the snow - the nephew from FL had a blast sledding and making snow angels. The first thing he said to his dad when they called back home was that he threw a snowball at momma. Also had Han behind the wheel for a few miles in some of the deeper snow. She did well, but felt a little uneasy when the vehicle would start to slide and a steep drop off was near the trail.
