I'm up for Paliza.

The one time I went on Paliza (with my 60), I'm fairly sure we took the 'Trail' that goes NE from the Paliza campground and goes right up the bottom of Paliza Canyon. On the map it's directly east of FS 10. It was a bit too much for an unlifted, long-wheelbase truck with a stock rear bumper. I drug a lot and had to go very slow with a spotter over ~5 large berms across the trail. I'm assuming this is the Paliza you are referring to, Jon and Andrew.

Yep. You will drag and loose your running boards. I don't care if we go out of Fenton. The 100 would have problems with Paliza.

It has been a really long time (+15 years) since I was up Paliza. So long I cannot remember it. I will be in my stock 1992 Toyota P/U. Paliza may be too much for the p/u. We may have to take a more wimpy route.

I came into this late. I understand wanting to up Paliza, especially since it hasn't been done in a while. I'd go if I knew I wouldn't rip off my plastic rear bumper and crunch the hell out of my disposable sliders. It's more fun and challenging for the majority of the people that have responded - who have short wheel bases or lifts/sliders/bumpers. Do not change your plans. I just want to make sure I know where the group is heading so I can make an informed decision and I don't get a surprise.

Snow is snow. I don't think we should exclude anybody. Let's find something out of Fenton.

What about FS 269 or 10? 269 splits off from SR 290 (to the west) between Ponderosa and Paliza and goes north up San Juan Canyon and then you can either choose to stay in the cayon or go along the mesa on FS 136. They both eventually meet back up with FS 10 and come out onto HWY 4 around Vallecitos de los Indios (just eas of the Jemez Falls CG).

Or, we could take FS 10 which goes straight north from the Paliza CG.

Or, we could take FS 266 east of the Paliza CG which is shown as an "unimproved" road on the map and eventually meets up with the Paliza trail about half-way up.

If I knew the 'wimp' crew had a good HAM setup, then I'd suggest we split and meet back up after the tougher section of the trail.

I've never been on any of these roads. According to the map, they are slightly better than the Paliza Canyon Trail.

Anywhere up there is new for me - I'll just be playing follow the leader. As long as there is decent snow my crew we be very happy....all my nephew has been talking about is going to the mountains and playing in the snow.

Have fun everyone. I wish I could go, but have plans. Don't forget to take pics.

I have a good HAM setup (2 meter only).

I was up on FR 652 the weekend after the HDC x-mas tree run (wife wanted to cut a tree too). Only went a mile up but was a fun road. Some little rocks (1.5 - 2.5 feet diameter) to go over/around. To access, go up Hwy 485 (through the tunnels). Shortly after the road turn to dirt head west on FR 652. This gets you on top of Peggy Mesa.

From this link you can see FR 652 (Deer Creek Rd).

Not so sure about that. My map doesn't show 266 connecting to Paliza.

I remember many years ago I went for a bike ride up Paliza. Somehow I came down another canyon (Hondo?) that might be what you are talking about. I seem to recall some gates. Sure wish I could remember how I traveled from Paliza over.

My map is the Forest Service map of the Santa Fe National Forest, 2004 edition (reprinted 2006)

Well one wimp chiming in... first trip out, i have a stock 80, de boarded, but nothing else... i should vote for fenton? i will be bringing the wife and 10mo old unless you all think that is unwise... for either route.

Decision time. How about this. Up Hwy 290, through Ponderosa to FR 10. Loop back south on FR 136 or FR 269. Or take a side excursion on FR 135. If there is no snow or the traveling was fast, we could pop out on HWY 4 and head toward Fenton. Another option, rather than traveling on FR 10, head east on FR 266.

But, at least we have a starting point, Hwy 290 to Paliza Campground and beyond....

FYI: FR 10 can be navigated by low clearance vehicles during the dry season.

Using the SNOTEL links Steve posted, now they're showing 28" on the west side and 18" on the east side (both at ~9500'). 126 past Fenton might not be a good choice for making much progress because that's pretty high to begin with.

David, if you're willing to meet at the North Portal, then I say we start at Ponderosa and see how it goes from there.

If there's lots of snow the 'easy' FS 10 could still be difficult enough for most everyone to enjoy it. And there's a few options of roads all in close proximity depending on what the snow depths turn out to be.

I was thinking fenton might be buried, too, so I'll plan on meeting at the north portal. See you at 0900. Hopefully my cb works.
Sl33p3, definitely bring the fam, you won't be the only one. Never know how the day will go, but it will be a good time nonetheless.
