The brakes are DONE! and it only took 10 times longer then I expected, but I guess that's a "project" for you. ;)

Drove it out of the garage, back and forth in the driveway in and out of gears, turned around, and right back in the other way to start on the projects in the rear.

It's rough...will take some getting used to, at the moment, I can't imagine driving this thing slow in the woods but I'll get there. It's a beast! :)

The brakes work GREAT which is a huge relief. Got 1 sides exhaust donut on so it's a bit quieter, the other one is in a tougher spot to reach so I didn't bother yet, I need to though, it's LOUD.

I need to drain and refill the gear box and tcase, then lube up the levers if I can, very stiff right now. Goes into 4H and 4L but not without a fight. Got to fatmat that trans hump too, you can really hear the gears in this thing ("normal" afaik) :)

Discovered the heater fan isn't working, it worked on the way home so I suspect I unhooked something inadvertently while I was working on the dash and pulling out the old aux. lights. I'll need to figure that out before I can really drive it too far.

Floor still needs some patches, then I'll get all the carpets and seat covers (now clean) back in. Still hoping to make the East Coast Pig Run. :)

Back to work tomorrow then I'm off Friday plus the weekend. going Friday to get it registered so I can take a longer test drive.

Crappy pics with the painted grill. First time I've washed it since I got it home, took off a bunch of the loose paint.

All my hard work i hidden behind the front wheels.

Going to get the new lenses on the back tomorrow and chase some electrical gremlins.

Time to order that case of Krylon olive drab. =)

It need to be rerouted as it's rubbing in a few places underneath as well. Good stuff though, nice Gibson mufflers and sturdy 2.5" pipes so I think the exhaust shop can reuse most of it.

I think I'll try to have them do it like Kina's "Franky", bring the pside across and just run 1 pipe straight back exiting just behind the dside rear spring hanger.

Got it registered today (only $20! yeah VT!) and after I go through the back brakes I can start troubleshooting on the road and get it to the exhaust shop, etc.

Lots of house cleaning today as our kitchen is nearly done and we're entertaining tomorrow, I should get some truck time on Sunday though.

Loks good Dave. Bring it down and we can play in the woods

dave that is looking great. i wont be at the FG so i think when your rig is all set you will need to take it for a mellow run on miller time or northfield or something like that....

And why won't you be at the FG?
We already have you listed as a Hardcore trail leader! : )

get back to us with a better excuse

J... saw some of your wines this weekend right up front at the liquor store near the wild oats in medford.

Nice progress on the Pig Dave. Looks like a beast!

thanks. :)

Didn't get as much done Sunday as I'd hoped, but got it back in the garage and started digging around for a loose fuel hose, nothing yet. :(

did it happen when you filled it or only when you filled it then drove? might be worth getting it really close to full... then getting it home, taking a fuel can and having someone else top it off while you get a better look? obviously not getting fuel all over you...

My wife is way for press checks in Burlington until at least Friday so it's just me and the boy for now. Big plan is to pull the front and rear sets out, clean up and patch the floor as necessary. Got a fresh role of duct tape to patch up the front seat, then reinstall everything including the now clean seatcovers and carpets and seatbelts with new extenders.

Also still need to find the fuel leak issue (suspected loose evap hose of some sort) and trace the fan problem (suspected bad ground)

Spent a couple hours chasing old wires in the truck last night, pulled all the junk stereo equipment, trying to get good grounds for a few things still. The poor thing has been SO hacked over it's lifetime but I don't think I need to put in a completely new harness, that was crazy talk.

Is it easy to put in a new, modern fuse panel though? I'd love to replace the glas fuses and add some new spots. I have 2 or 3 wires jammed onto fuse ends from add on gages and other things related to the V8 swap (PO).

Thoughts?

Dave,

Look on the back of the stock fuse block. At least on the FJ40's there are two posts for adding extra circuits. One post is always live while the other is switched with the key. I've had good luck adding extra circuits to the factory panel from those posts. I never saw a need to replace the glass fuses myself. Otherwise Painless and others sell add-a-circuit stuff and fuse panels. Adding a new panel would only require some quality crimped butt splices (I use some that are heat shrink-able with a sealing adhesive; they work great if installed correctly. Available from parts stores in low quantities and higher prices and from electronics suppliers for less in box quantities) and time to cut the old panel out and add the new.

I've pulled a few nice fuse panels from cars in the salvage yards too. Gumby had a write-up on a panel he found under the hood of a Taurus. My FJ60 has one from a Mazda RX7 that my brother scrapped. Guess it's a trade of time to find a useable panel in a yard vs. buying something out of a catalogue.

Nick
