No, no, no. ;p You are whacking the two sides of whatever it is that's bored through, and has the stud sticking through it. You're not trying to force the TRE out like a pickle fork or puller, just break the bond that holds it.

You want to make the hole that the stuck part is in go from "O" to "0" for just a split second breaking the bond. It either works slick, or not at all. We use the same method with 10# sledges to take apart forty year old 6" threaded pipe couplings.

got it. I'll give it a shot tonight, thanks

no luck with the dual BFH method. With the steering arms an brakes so close to each other there just isn't enough wacking room.

Guess I'll get the pickle fork and tre separator on the way home tonight after all.

Drained the old coolant last night and pulled off the 2 radiator hoses that are bad (the top one is too short as well.) Will get new ones today at the store and do a good flush and refill on the 350 tonight.

This weekend:

Drain and refill the trans. and tcase tonight as well as replacing the ebrake hardware

Still need front shocks, going to try to source something locally.

Finish TRE job, tighten Center arm and steering box

My FIL is going to help me wire up my new horn and after all that is done, I'll be ready to get her off for exhaust pipe rerouting and inspection!

I'll still have a few tuneup type things to do before FG but I need to get some road miles on it asap.

Dave I think I am going to have my lv finished before you:)

no way. :P

picked up the rad hoses at lunch, with any luck they will fit.

It occurred to me that my engine has no oil cap? Where the heck do I put the oil in? (custom built 350 w/moroso valve covers(iirc))

yep body goes back on next week about the same time you get your tire rod off :P

It probably has a big chrome breather with or w/o a hose connected to it..............just yank that out of the valve cover and pour it in. Or pull the distributor..........just kidding. ;)

The pickle fork worked like a charm! :) Ive got the short rod all done with new TRE's and am socking the long rod in liquid wrench now trying to loosen up the old TRE's in that one.

Got the hoses and coolant all back together and the engine running again. Small leak at the top rad hose from the temp probe that goes in, need to finangle that one a bit but otherwise good.

so far so good.

Still leaking coolant at the top rad hose so we rant the temp probe differently and used some tstat rtv, once that dries will see if it holds.

TRE's all on, tires on, driveway alignment done. they are only a hair off of the inside wheel lip though.... thick, wide, ugly alloys aren't backspaced right...ggrrrrr.. it was barely noticeable with the beat old TRE's but with fresh new stuff on there it's pretty noticeable. I don't like it......contemplating a new set of wheels and tires, probably some 16x7's with the correct offset and some tall skinny TrXus MT's (285/75/16?)... not exactly in the budget though. I'll have to talk to the CFO tonight. ;)

interior all 409'ed up, seat covers back on. Seat belts back in with all new hardware.

The wife wants to take spin around the neighborhood once the coolant thing is all set then it's back into the garage to do the ebrake and start replacing gear oil.

Ordered my shocks form Autozone, they'll be here Tuesday, just some cheapo Gabrials but they have lifetime warranty, not bad for $15 each. :) :)

Go Dave!
So you going to run Carnage?
Or you going straight out back at F&F?

ha! :) I'm not sure what I'll be wheeling, probably ride along/hike FnF on Friday, then run the stockers on Sat morning. Planning to be busy with BBQ/Raffle stuff Sat afternoon. I'd like to run stockers with the Trail Team in an FJC on Sunday.

horn in and works great
shocks on an dfit great, the dside just misses the steering relay rod.
all bare metal and rust painted (love that krylon camo green)
transmission drained and refilled

The old gear oil that came out of the tcase & trans was ug-leee.

Tcase drianed and ebrake job started. Found out disconnecting just the front of the driveshaft didn't give utie enough compression to drop it down so I need to disconnect the back as well. Problem was the bolts were stuck. I soaked them in liquid wrench and will hopefully get them off tonight and do the ebrake.

Then I'm ready for the minor exhaust fix and inspection. Hoping the TRE's won't be an issue (they just barely miss the inner wheel lip.

Need to put in the trannyhump gasket and hardware still as well. Ta should button it up nicely and with any luck keep the fumes, dirt, cold air and some noise out of the cabin.

Once inspected, I will want to drain and refill both diffs, do a complete oil change, maybe new plugs, and wirewheel the drip rail and repaint, but none of that needs to be done for inspection so it can wait until next week

you sure are getting to know that truck dave. are you getting more confident in your abilities to do bigger mechanical jobs?

So it turns out that VT wants you to have cats.... no exceptions, even for old vehicles tht never had them.

So I need to go ahead and have the exhaust redone, which I had planed to do, and need to do as it's hung badly and very poorly routed. I'm bummed but that's that, if I had finished the truck earlier this wouldn't be a problem but I didn't so that's that.

They recommended a custom exhaust place in Claremont so I'll get it to them next week and get it all redone right and be good. This will give me time to deal with a few other little issues and tuneup stuff as well.

:( {sigh}

No way on the cat converter. I will find you a place to get it inspected. Morningside in Claremont or North Charlestown is Place for exhaust.

Morningside is where they suggested for exhaust.

I think I'll just get the exhaust done since it has other issues anyway... it's not like the truck was otherwise perfect so if it wasn't this it could easily be a multitude of other issues. They never even did the inspection as they looked at the exhaust as soon as they started it up. ;) (very loud)

At this point, for my own sanity, I need to move on to other FG stuff.... too much stress already. I appreciate the thought though Gary.

With further digging it seems the guys at the inspection station had no idea what they were taking about. My truck does NOT need cats.

That said, it was only 1 of a number of things that could have failed the truck so it's back in my garage for now.

I'll be driving a borrowed Honda Element to the FG. ;)
