Greetings from Chile

Hello!

My name is Pablo and I live in Chile. I drive a 1999 RZJ-90, without mods. I use it to go to the Andes mountains, where I like to climb.

A couple of pics:

I have to change my tyres and was wondering if I can fit 15 in rims. R15 tyres are cheaper than R16.

Greetings from Chile.

Hi Pablo,
Welcome to ih8mud! I also live in Chile and have a RZJ90 just like yours.

15 inch rims will not fit the 90 series Prado due to the size of the brake caliper. You can fit the 15 in rims with a wheel spacer to move the rim out and away from the caliper. A 1 or 1.5 inch spacer should work. You can get these spacers in Chile from many different vendors that import 4x4 parts, or look in www.twistedandes.com for "espaciadores 6 en 5.5" (6-5.5 is the wheel bolt pattern of our Toyotas.) Some local fabbers make these spacers in steel, but i recommend aluminum/alloy for weight. (yes you will feel the weight difference)

I've heard that some people grind the caliper to fit 15 inch rims on 3rd gen 4runners, but it needs to be done very carefully, I do not recommend it. Also keep in mind that some 3rd gen 4runners have a smaller caliper that allows the use of 15 inch rims, so another solution is to find these calipers and switch them, but I'm not sure if it's worth the effort and/or cost, versus the cost of getting 16 inch tires.

If you decide to change to 15 in rims I might be interested in buying your 16x8 rims, feel free to contact me by PM.

Feel free to post any other questions you may have, good to see you here,
