Well, after looking for one for a long time, I finally bought a 60. I live in Philadelphia, but this LC was in the Ozarks of Missouri. I flew to St. Louis on Saturday morning with my wife, rented a car and drove 2 hours west to the seller's house.

Here's my 2 owner, 1987 FJ60 with 173000 miles. Also the first vehicle that is not a motorbike that I've ever purchased.

All in all it is in great condition. Mechanically solid and babied. No rust, save for mild surface rust on the internal face of the outer channels. The owner was a real cool guy and we got along real well. The truck was mostly driven once a week on fly-fishing trips, and before that, used with his kids before they all grew up.

Living on the East Coast, I'm am/was very concerned about slowing and preventing rust on this beauty. I ordered a bunch of Fluid Film and had it shipped to his house in hopes of applying before the trip back east and the potential for snow/ice/salt. Well, it never showed up on time. Also, it snowed pretty much the whole 1000 mile journey back with my girl. Slush, salt, ice everywhere. The 100% opposite of what I had hoped for. It was a real tough drive through mountains with an unfamiliar vehicle, snow, and ice. But we made it and it was a great adventure.

Here is what she looks like now. I stopped at Eastwood Supply on my way home and got some of their Salt Neutralizer (link) which I will be bathing the truck in once it is not 20 degrees F outside. Im so sick of salt and this particular winter we are having. Im hoping that with temperatures as low as they are right now, that I have a little time until this s**t begins corrosive reactions. I'd spray it off right now but it would freeze right away.

I love this truck. It is extremely solid, slow, and fun. I only passed about 4 tractor trailers, but was passed by about 100. I averaged around 14 mpg on the way home. I think after a good tune up I may be able to squeeze another mpg out of it.

Problems Ive noticed on the way home:

-Really annoying steering knock while turning, especially at low speed or parking. I think it may be the steering shaft needs attention? TREs?

-Maybe Im not privy to a certain quirk of these trucks, but I dont think that when you lock the doors, then close them, that they unlock as soon as the door slams closed. I have to look at the lock mechanism. Its the mechanical equivalent of someone repeating everything you say in annoying way.

-Windows are real hard to roll up, almost to the point of feeling like I'll brake the handle off. Need to check regulators as well as glass channel rubbers.

-Temperature gauge is not working.

Other than that, I am real happy to have her. And this forum has given me a lot of knowledge and ideas for the truck.

Everything 1980s Toyota does that as far as the door locks. Keep the handle pulled up when you close the door and it'll stay locked. The front two doors do this, the back doors do not.

Edit: you got a beauty. Love the classic rims on it.

Welcome to mud! Nice clean rig, love the hubcaps.
Hold the handle up when you close the door to lock. Pop off your interior door panels and grease the window mechanisms.

Thanks guys. Yeah, thats what I was doing do to close/lock them. I just didnt know that it was inherent to the design of the locks.

Welcome Patrick! You bought a cruiser in my old stomping grounds! I didn't know there were any left! Next time you go through STL let me know I'll set you up with a list of places to eat!
The lock mechanism is annoying, I just locked it externally so it was never a problem ever again. But as said by others lifting the handle works too!
Knocking when turning the wheels is usually just a steering bushing, or tie rod end link. But like all things, it could be something completely different!

wow thats a good looking cruiser, nice find.

Nice truck - love the FJ40 rims/caps. The hard-to-close windows are likely a combination of the regulators needing grease and the flocking being worn away in the rubber window channels. No easy fix for this, short of replacing the felts, but you can spray silicone lube in the window felt channels to test the theory.

You scored on a really nice looking 60. Congrats!

14 MPG.....that's hybrid like mileage for a FJ60. :)

A beautiful specimen! Welcome!

man that is beauty... quickly with those fender flairs on there, trow some 33s and BAM!! done :) i want some of those so bad but they seem to be an arm and leg in the states.. great find!!

Nice rig! Is that salt all over the front end in that picture?
That is disgusting if it is! Glad we don't have to deal with that junk

I wasn't sure how I felt about the flares at first but now I really like them. I think the PO said he got them from SOR. I'm going to have to remove them and slather some Fluid Film along the fenders soon.

:cool:Nice clean rig. Dig the fender flares! How's the interior? Undercarriage?

The interior is great. Only a few imperfections, like the typical driver's seat cushion tear which was patched, and a cracked dash pad from New Mexico sun (lived a good portion of its life there). The undercarriage is clean too. The only area that needs my attention is the inside of the outer frame channels near the tailgate. There is some surface rust which looks easily cleaned with an angle grinder and some phosphoric acid.

Very nice! Are they that rare over there that you have to travel that far to get one?

Well, Ive never seen one in Philadelphia. Sometimes they show up for sale in NJ/NY but they are never rust-free like this. Also, I saw this for sale through my internet searches and I immediately wanted it. I'm sure I could have found one closer, but Im sure it wouldn't have been as much fun as the trip to go get this.

Yes. Extremely disgusting. I hate it. You are lucky that you dont have to deal with it. A lot of areas in the Northeast are using Magnesium Chloride now, as opposed to CaCl or NaCl. MgCl is cheaper, safer for vegetation, and more effective at lower temps. However, its also the most corrosive and hydroscopic. AKA s***ty.

I was able to get it all off using Road Salt Neutralizer from Eastwood. The stuff worked great and definitely calmed my "I can almost just hear it rusting" nerves.

Going through the records kept by all the owners last night, I saw that, in the early 2000s, it had an Old Man EMU medium lift/shackle set up installed. The PO didnt install it, nor did he know. Im glad I found out so Im not ordering Toyota suspension replacement components in the future.

I see that it also had a lot of recall work done. Specifically the fuel tank and an alternator. I wasn't aware that was a recall campaign for alternators on these trucks.

I also found out that im not the 3rd owner, but the 4th. I have no history on the truck up to 85,000 miles where the 2nd owner bought it for $11,500 in 1997. The 2nd owner took real great care of it according to the records he kept.

Thought I heard that Seattle actually started to salt (King county)

How did you find that beautiful truck up here in the north east. And you have them nice fender flares too, which of course are a rarity in this country!! Congrats on the purchase, awesome truck.
