I am purchasing a '93 KZJ78 Prado with a 3.0 K turbo diesel. My first question is whether I will be able to maintain highway speeds with this truck comfortably and whether this engine would pull 34" tires through the mountains of Colorado?
Sorry for the newb questions - I can't wait to learn more about this rig and contribute to the forum!

That motor with a bit of tuning a couple upgrades can make excellent power. Wish I had one in my 78.

I've never driven one, buy my understanding is that even at stock power they are not too bad.

I would go for a 32" tyre. Or be prepared for a lot of gear changing. It would be ok on stock wheels and tyres.

If I'm not mistaken the KZ models came with 4.3 diff ratio which makes it go better on the highway but bigger then standard wheels might make it feel abit sluggish. Usually people change to 4.88 when changing to bigger wheels but then your highway speed decreases accordingly.

Thanks guys! Sounds like it had a modest lift with 33s. That might be a good size tire until I learn more about the vehicle.

You will have no issues running it on 33 's around town or highway work. With 33's it will be approx 10% out on the speedo.
I have owned one for near on 20 years and have moved thru the various mods from 2 inch suspension lift with 33's right upto re gearing the diffs with 4.88's and 35 inch tyres.

Mines stock aside from 265's on 17in. Rims (I think that is around 32" tire) Anyway.. I can go 75 all day at about 2800 RPMs... no problems

I Have a 1995 KZJ78 with 31s for winter, studded duratrac wranglers 10.5 wide, and in the summer I run 33x10.5x15's KO2's. I have a 3 inch lift and mostly stock motor. New head and new turbo, EGR delete. I find it's a bit sluggish with the 33's getting to highway speeds and it definitely has much higher EGT's with the 33's vs 31's when climbing hills. I live in the rockies and my town is at 1383m and I work at 1800m. I don't think I would go to 34's on my truck without some motor changes (higher turbo pressure and fuel mapping, snorkel etc) That's just my 2 cents though. The 33's are big enough for what I need.

Love the truck, glad you picked one up.

Lomoski, thanks for that added info! I think the 33’s are going to be the perfect middle ground for me.
On a side note, how much does adding a snorkel help for airflow and performance?

I haven't done the snorkel yet, but my understanding is that it will decrease egt further which is key on these little turbo diesels. If you don't have an egt gauge installed I would recommend that as your first upgrade. It's amazing how hot the EGT can get when you're driving up hills etc. I've already replaced my head due to cracking. Completely changed the way I drive. Also I would recommend rebuilding the fan clutch before summer. I can almost guarantee that the timing on it is wrong and that the oil needs replacing. There is a great write up on here. Just search blue fan clutch upgrade and read it through. Will save you a headache later on.

Looking forward to seeing posts of your new ride!

You wont notice any difference. The main reason a snorkel is used is to keep the air intake higher than the dust or water.
Any minute power benefit is probably gobbled up by the wind hitting the snorkel

Hi folks, does anyone know of a brand that produce a KZJ78 snorkel?

Seems to be only one supplier in NZ - Hawkers - and I don't like how high it sits on the body panel.

Cheers in advance folks. Here's my rig as thanks.

Ask ARB. If they dont have it listed they can often match it up with a snorkel from another make model. They just need one with the same windscreen angle. Other wise try ebay, their were a heap of snorkels for these from a Malaysian supplier at $99AUD
There could be some good reasons its sits like it should. It doesnt look like it would fit between the top of the fender and the crease in the panel
