Hi all,
For posterity, I thought I’d share my ECU troubles on my ’95 KZJ78 in case anyone else runs into the same symptoms.
My new-to-me KZJ78 would suddenly shut off after about 15 minutes of driving. It would crank but not start until it had been left for around 10 minutes, after which I’d only get another 5 minutes before it died again. At times, it also had a rough idle.
On top of that, the overdrive would constantly switch on and off when engaged.
The culprit turned out to be every capacitor in the ECU leaking all over the board, a well-known issue with 90s Toyotas due to faulty capacitors that made it into the supply chain.
I sent the ECU to Anything Electronic in NZ, and they rebuilt it with a very quick turnaround. Since getting it back, the Prado has been running perfectly, and the overdrive now works as it should. Highly recommend their work.
Moral of the story: if you haven’t had your ECU capacitors replaced yet, I highly recommend doing it before you end up stuck on the side of the highway like I did!
