New timing belt and no power

^^^HaHa, don't remind me. Mine didn't want to start after I did the timing belt as there was a bright red shop rag in front of the throttle butterfly and I had somehow installed the intake without seeing it. Man I felt like a dummy... I had almost forgotten.

An obstruction or vacuum leak is a definite possibility.

When they brought you back in to see it did you see all three timing marks? (The two cam marks were visible, aligned and correct handed + the crank pulley was dead on TDC?)

I'm inclined to believe the shop about the timing, should be throwing codes if off from crank. Sensor is only on DS, but if both left/right match...

If you are comfortable doing it I would start blowing propane around and see if you can detect a vacuum leak that way. Maybe if you find it they will fix it.

I don't use shops much but I would sort of expect them to open up their schedule and get to the bottom of it immediately as they agree there is a new problem that started with the work they did.

I would check over all the hoses that enter the intake between the MAF and the Throttle body. There are some to check on the back of the intakes expansion chamber, the PCV valve, etc etc. Blow a little propane from a torch at those connections with the engine running and if the engine speed changes you may have found it.

At this point I'd be pissed, and unless you trust this shop "a lot" I go elsewhere. Where it is possible some other issue arose at same time, I don't like the term "scheduled appointment".

If different shop finds error in belt job, take them the bill. If not tell them thanks is wasn't their doing.

The mechanic showed me the two timing marks and that was it. He did say that he brought in another mechanic just double checked him in that regards.

So, you looked at the marks on the belt VS the cams, but did you know that the L-CAM mark goes on the RIGHT SIDE when facing the engine, and the R-CAM mark on the left? The arrows on the belt are to point towards the FRONT of the truck, not towards the mark on the cam housing.

This was posted earlier in the thread but not sure if you saw it or fully understood it...

20 minutes doesn't seem like enough time to actually check the belt alignment. You have to pull quite a bit off to see all 3 marks clearly, especially the crank timing mark.

I'd guess that they but the belt on backwards. I did that when I changed my timing belt for the first time and while it looked like everything was lined up, it was actually off by two teeth. I didn't get an error code for over a week after I finished, but power was effected and the engine sounded different. Once I finally got a cam alignment error I pulled it apart again and found my mistake.

The L-Cam mark goes on the right side of the engine and the R-Cam goes on the left if standing in front of the truck facing the engine, so it's easy to get it backwards.

Notice, this cam is on the DRIVER side, but says L-CAM, because the orientation is based on the view from behind the wheel, not the perspective as from in front of the truck...

I once that belt is set proper and than crank is turned, the belt mark don't line up any more. If the timing mark on crank is set to zero with number one cylinder at TDC, then the marks on cams and housing should match.

Correct. The marks on the belt are just for initial setup. Once the tensioner is released just look for marks on gears.

The cam position has been discussed quite a bit, when I did the timing belt on mine the FSM said to set the crank at TDC and then rotate clockwise 50 degrees. Could this effect power?

As I understand it the 50 degree thing is just to relieve tension on the belt. My FSM (2004) just has you line up the marks.

Did this problem get diagnosed in the end? I think I might be having a similar problem.

Unfortunately some forget as mud members strive to aid those in need, closure benefits all.

The photo in post #26 is a good one. Did they line up the timing marks on the T or the Vertical bar/line? They should line up on the vertical bar/line (not the T mark).

See recent post where the truck had no power above 3000 rpm. The timing belt was improperly aligned to the T marks. Link listed below.

Ask them if the aligned it to the T marks. It sure seems like they did not put the belt on correctly.

I once put a T-belt on and it was off by two teeth. My turbochargered 4 banger ran very poorly.
