I hope its ok to post this in here, I wanted a smaller "focus group" than if posting in the I8mud forum.

I'm getting ready to get some new shoes for my FJC and am considering 2 options. I'm weighing the differences between 255/85/16 and 285/75/16's. Obviously, the 255are are not as wide but they are taller. I can use the extra ground clearance of the 255's and the taller sidewall but would the extra width of the 285's give enough difference in traction? Considering I would probably air down, the extra sidewall should compensate for the extra width.

The biggest difference is the cost, the 255's are about $50-60 cheaper per tire and that goes along way on the homefront.

Thanks in advance for your advise and guidance...

Go taller, wider will rub on the body mount...that is the primary issue with tire fitment on FJCs.

Dan - I am planning on getting the body mount trimmed regardless of the tire choice for more clearance. I have read many threads where Taco owners seem to love the 255 tires.

From a purely technical level the narrower tire is actually better for traction. The narrower track allows for more psi on the ground. The issue comes in with terrain and lift height.

Mud? wider can be better because of the floatation.
Steep hills? Narrow can be better but easier to throw a bead and also makes the truck more unstable if the overall track width is not substantial (center of gravity issue).

Personally, I like the looks of a narrower tire. I am at 35" and 12.50 looks better. 37s are up next and staying with 12.50"

Trimming the body mount will help regardless, but I think the 255 is a good animal since it is ~33" tall and 10" wide. I doubt you will need to trim the mounts with this tire since BMTHiker is running 34x10.5 Swampers and does not rub on stock steel rims.

Thanks Marshall, it could be well worth the drive. Cheapest I've found for the 255/85/16 Super Swamper Trxus Mud Terrain Radial is $142 each (4 Wheel Parts) which seems pretty reasonable. I'll have to consider giving him a call.
