Looking to improve the handling of my new to me cruiser, the shocks look like they need replacing and feel like it too. My fj60 seems also to have a noticable lean to the drivers side. Anyway, since i didn't plan ahead and my brand new tires are 31's i'm not looking for a lift since it'll probably look silly? The aftermarket shocks i found at CCoT's all say they're too long unless you have a 2-2.5" lift. What are some good shocks that'll work at stock height? I do intend to go on some trails and off roading, but nothing insane like i've seen some of you guys do in your trucks on the forum  no backflips off 10ft boulders for my baby! :hillbilly:

OME sells stock height leaf springs.

Post a picture of your springs and see how bad they are sagging.

Your handling could be worn out spring hanger bushings or a multitude of other things such as loose or worn Tie Rods.

Your best price on OEM shocks probably will be Cruiser Dan at American Toyota. See the vendors section.

My only advice is run something very high quality on the front (preferably Bilsteins), and something ultra soft on the rear (preferably MV-12's or 5100 series Bilsteins). You will quickly discover this is your best on-road and off-road handling!!!!!

I used to have KYBs on mine before I got my lift. They really improved the handling compared to the cheap ones that were on it from the PO.

Im not sure that shocks for a 2-3 inch lift wouldnt work, no one drops their bumpstops with an OME lift so the shocks shouldnt be too long for a stock setup. I stuff mine to the bumps on the regular and i think my front shocks are 4 inches over stock.

This is probably a stupid question, but are my leaf springs ok? I really don't know what they're supposed to look like, this is my first ever truck/suv..... my dd is a '07 civic si so it's not much help as a vehicle to compare it to :\ :\

i'm going to go with toyota stock shocks from cruiserdan, but don't know if i should get the leaf springs replaced as well while i'm at it?

I don't agree(I don't know that I have ever agreed with Downey). Have fun controlling (damping, not spring rate) that heavy load of camping gear or lumber or twin St. Bernards.

That said, I have fell in love with the KYB GR2 shocks. Very nice, variable valving etc. Other makers have the similar shocks. I'd stay away from hydraulic shocks unless you are loaded all the time. They are stiff and change a lot with ambient temperature.

EDIT: And your leafs look better than mine. Probably tired, but not bad.

KYB GR2 are only for the rear? what do you have up front? Monomax's? Thanks for the help with the shocks. What have you used other than KYB's?

Your springs look pretty good, compared to many 60's I've seen. They typically sag more than that in the rear.

Dammit. Sorry, GR2 on the wife's car and gas-a-just for the 2F-E Wagon. Anyway, her car handles better and I still like the KYBs I have. I had Gabriel gas-a-just and they blew out after just 2 years (we've only put on 25k miles since 2001).

arrggghh.... i was all set to order a set of OEM shocks, but now these KYB's have intrigued me. It would be 2x the price of the OEM's from Dan, but i don't want to have buyers remorse like i did have buying my tires and later wishing i had gone with 33's........

Would the KYB's be better all around than the OEM's if pricing wasn't factored into the equation?

I think plenty of people are very satisfied with the OEM shocks. I got a good deal on mine. The Gabrial shocks were under warranty, I paid the difference for the KYBs.
