Recently replaced my steering rack with brand new. New CV boots in and out on both sides. New radiator and hose, new thermostat and thermostat elbow. Got the car back from the dealer and my VGRS is acting funny. My steering would randomly be out of alignment by more than 90 Degrees and come back straight on another start up. This has mostly gone away after the alignment done yesterday. So far, it stays center with the wheel. VGRS system was flawless before this repair. Pulled codes on TIS and I'm getting C1528. Where do I start? Tried searching forums but I couldn't find results. Still learning.

Regarding misfire, I changed coilpack from 5 & 8 to 1 & 2 to check if it's actually the coils.

Considering that the rack was replaced, you may want to do the VSC zero point calibration, and the VGRS steering wheel alignment (both in Techstream).

Agree with doing the zero point calibration. Look at my 2 recent posts in the zero point calibration threads, I posted the TSB. The Shop Manual procedure is way complicated and is not necessary, the TSB clarifies that you only need to do the 2 steps with techstream, and Exit once the lights are blinking at .13 second intervals...it's very obvious when that starts!

The TSB shows the flowchart using the handheld scan tool but you can use techstream. I'm still working on getting my steering wheel perfect, it's just a bit off, so the order of zero point vs. VGRS centering is not important.

I tried multiple times to zero point calibrate via TS. I'm unable to. I followed your instructions.

1. Go to VRGS ECU Utility steering angle adjust option.
2. Go through the process. It shows error at the last stage before it completes due to DTC codes.

So i went to ABS/VSC ECU. Asked to keep car idled. Did. From utility option.

1. Reset memory. It said the vehicle should be stopped with IG ON. (I tried both with Engine ON and IG ON/Engine OFF).

2. Signal checked. Attached photo.

3. Test mode. It says the wait time is given in repair manual, I dont have any repair manuals, so i waited for 5 seconds and pressed exit.

I went for a drive and no change. Hooked up techstream and tried the process again. Did a health check and now i'm left with a different code. C1515, C1516.

Tried to reset steering angle and still cant due to DTC. I have tried to clear all DTC but these don't go away.

You could try the SST reset method. I had to do the reset twice and got the undone code you have. Others here have reported their cable wouldn’t do the zero point.

Also try to clear all DTCs in all systems, I also read another person say their engine DTC was causing a problem in the system.

the SST method basically is shorting out pin 4 and pin 13 of the OBD II port, yes?

I have tried clearing all DTCs but it won't erase this VGRS code. It's nearly 2am for me, I'll continue the SST test in the morning.

Update:

Did Zero Point Calibration several times, manual SST method i.e short pin 4 & pin 12 of OBDII with the ZPC PDF posted by Slickspawn and and Techstream setup. with Techstream, I have done the reset memory-Signal check-Test mode. Drove car for 5 mins after and no change. DTC code C1515 & C1516 remain. Upon clearing all DTC, C1515 refuses to get erased. I also disconnected the battery for nearly 45 mins to reset ECU, connected it back and did ZPC as very first step even before starting the vehicle - still no change.

Removed driver side lower dash panel to try and get better access to VGRS ECU and did the first continuity test, there is continuity between the pins. Next is to supply power to the the V13 plug, trying to figure out how I can do it as a one man job. But I also noticed I don't have one of the pins on there. Pin 7 (MGND). Am I correct or am i seeing something wrong?

Ok, stupid me. I was looking at the pin the wrong way, it's a forward facing diagram. Still trying to figure out how to power it and check resistance within 3 mins as a one man job. any tips?

Did you try to do the steering angle initialization procedure?

Diagnostics. VGRS. Initialization.

Thank you for the link. I'm going to take a print of Initialization, calibration and trouble codes and how to reset.

Going through the repair manual, under pre-check section there's a table which has all the values on it and what it should read. mine is out of the max limit of one item. it doesn't seem to change and the STraight and flag value doesn't go valid even after driving it. I think this is the root cause of all my issues.

I spoke to the shop that did the rack and he mentioned he did not touch the actuator, only changed the rack. The dealer before him which did the radiator work etc might have since they quoted me a lot to repair the old one that leaked very bad and I told them i'll just replace it with new.

The negative value above max suggests the actuator is rotated out of it's max limit?

update:

Gone through the repair manual many times trying to initialize, calibrate, reset etc etc..but my VGRS doesn't seem to budge. Still stuck with C1515 no matter what I'm doing. My straight angle valid flag remains invalid regardless of whatever happens and my Actuator angle is at -289.28, which is 2.8Degree above max limit.

At this point, I'm giving up with VGRS after 2 full day of diagnosing and trying to sort out this problem. I'm taking it back to the dealer which did the radiator job from which point this problem started to begin.

update:

Had my car in the shop and they tried to diagnose. It's an independent authorized dealer and they said they have never worked or had issues with any VGRS before, its their first. They even sent my car to another specialist and got quoted to replace my steering actuator for cost of a bank. Needless to say I'm not going to throw money at it until I find what happened and fix it because I'm very certain its something small. everything worked perfect.
