does not read like the QX is replacing the Patrol but rather just sharing the frame etc? I doubt the world market is ready to embrace a 5.7 gas V8... That pic of the Patrol is surprising to me. I thought that was more like a utilitarian truck in Oz and all.

I think they mean that the Armada/QX56 are going to start using the Patrol platform instead of having their own different one.

Yeah, the LX570 certainly does offer you an interior well worth its price tag, but the LC200 doesn't. I think Toyota did this to differentiate the LX200 and LC200 because the LX/LC100s were literally using the same interior with only differences in leather quality, real wood and minor revisions into the center stack.

The QX56 isn't replacing the Patrol, it's based off the Patrol because the Armada platform is a flop. Using a Patrol platform is more cost effecient since the Patrol is sold all over the world so they wont have to make a bunch of platforms Nissan can't make a big profit off of. Toyota has the 120, currently 150 series platform. Off this profitable platform, they're able to create many vehicles without losing their butts. You've got the world class cash cow pickup, the Hilux and the cheaper built Tacoma, FJ-Cruiser, Prado/GX, 4Runner and Fortuner.

So if Toyota sells a Toyota Tacoma for $18,000, they can take that same platform and put a Lexus badge on it with a carry over suspension from their 4Runner parts bin and add some air suspension with some wood and leather. Now you got a cash cow. The only vehicles Toyota sells that are considered a halo platform or a less cost effective platforms are:

200/100/80 series - Only 2 vehicles are made from this
Toyota Century - hand built and extremely expensive one off vehicle
X platform - Toyota's old Cressida platform which only one car with different badges was made and currently sold as the Toyota Mark X

These cars are less profitable to Toyota compared to the rest of their lineup. So what Nissan is doing is their cutting cost by reducing a platform.

Yes, the current patrol is somewhat utilitarian like the 80 series and at least in oz available in several trim levels with a CR TDI or petrol option. This 'new patrol' is just going down the path of all SUVs - IFS/IRS with tons of electronic junk that will self destruct in the first deep water crossing. Obviously Nissan & Toyota know that the larger market for this style of SUV is getting to & from Starbucks and heaven forbid if the triple shot fancy coffee spills in the drink holder if the suspension isn't IFS/IRS :)

Toyota has the 7x series and the 4 door wagon to fill in for those that want the 4 door solid f/r axle vehicle that can handle continuous offroad dust/vibration/water etc with a decent diesel engine.

Nissan only has the patrol series (forget about pathfinders and other light duty stuff) and now that they've gone to IFS/IRS on the wagon I'm not sure what their cab/chassis and ute models will be based on.

I'll bet in oz there's a big run on picking up the last of the solid axle patrols before the new junk goes for sale at the dealers.

cheers,
george.

If your like me and your around LandCruisers every day and everyone in your family owns one, you'll know the big difference. The 200 parked side by side with a 100 shows how cheap the interior is. Even a blind person will feel the cheapness of the plastic hollow dashboard of the 200 vs the vinyl wrapped and padded dashboard of the 100. It's not just my opinion, but its fact. I understand that automakers will cut down the quality of certain parts of a vehicle to make up costs for new options and acessories, but the LandCruiser 200 has a cheaper build quality and material choice on the inside and is pricier than the 100. I call it, fast cash cow. ;)

i agree. i too had a 100 (Lexus LX470) before. indeed to me the 200 is not as classy or should i say luxurious than the previous 100 series. i got over it by telling myself that toyota is getting more and more eco friendly. plus the lack of leather wrapped dashboard made it easier to clean and maintain ie more for serious off road. so to me it is a plus point. :D

I do like my CLS63 AMG with the performance package more then the Bentley GT. It is a awesome performance machine. The 500+ HP V8 in the 6.2 liter normally asperated engine sounds like a NASCAR when you get on it. The interior is all function, yes it is quality but not over the top like the Bentley GT. I debadged mine to make it more of a sleeper. I love to have the ricer guys race up to me and then dust them off :). My LX470 is a 2004 but looks and performs like a new SUV, real quality in build and materials. It will be replaced someday by another LC/LX.

AMG's are in their own league. That and the Bentley GT, we took one out a few weeks ago and it is such a wild car (not as wild as a 430 though ) but it's definitely a blast to drive.

200-Series are Cash Cows? That must be a statement from a non-200-Series owner. Whether LC or LX, you are getting exactly what you are paying for. The finest built and most durable SUV 7+ seater on the planet.

And the 200 has the 100 beat in almost everything (except fitting 35's for now :D ). I'd KILL for the LC 200's interior/controls in my 100! I don't know...something not adding up in this thread!?

I'd like to see more body protection on the 200

What do you mean by that?

Slee makes sliders for it and there are front and rear bumpers available as well.

The 80 series is no longer produced. I think you meant the 7X Series which is manufactured on the same line as the 200/570.

I would disagree with your last statement about these vehicles being "less profitable." I would say the exact opposite that these vehicles make Toyota a lot of money in certain worldwide markets and sectors.

They produce a Land Cruiser every 150 seconds at Yoshiwara. There must be a demand for these vehicles if they are producing any of them at all.

Answer your question?

The finest thing I see from a 200 series is everything underneath the sheet metal. The interior materials aren't anywhere near as good as the 100. I'm not arguing about ergonomics, but I am arguing that the material used is cheap.

I didn't say they still produce the 80 or the 100, I'm giving an example of the platform that hasn't been used. And me being Arabian, visit Arabia often, I'm aware of the LC's popularity world wide.

LC's don't all come packaged up like in the USA or UK. the 100 series came in many trims. For example:

G = stripped down manual windows with no center console or even arm rests, 3 spoke non airbag wheels, steel wheels and a 1FZ-FE with a part time 4WD system

GX = adds power windows, center console, HVAC 5spd manual only

GX-R = Adds luxuries such as cd players, wood grain and leather optional Automatic transmission or 5spd manual

VX = Adds what you get in a 98-2002 100 optional Automatic transmission or 5spd Manual

VX-R = Adds everything you get on a LX470 optional Automatic transmission or 5spd manual

VX-R Limited = More then what you get in a LX470 including locking rear differential, front mount winch, optional Automatic transmission or 5spd manual

I think the winch was probably optional in some other packages. So its this kind of packaging that makes the 100/200 series sell way more than you'd see in America.
