Louvered turd.

hood.jpg

Awesome! I love it :)

It is the stock hood. It's not easy to press those louvers into a formed hood. Even for pros with years of custom car building experience. Serious pain in the ass. I'm happy with the work. It's going to look good when it's finished and I'll be happy when I feel hot air blasting out of them.

Thanks to treeroot for doing the leg work on this mod.
And thanks to Rex and the guys at Custom Auto in Loveland for putting up with my bull****, stupid questions, last minute requests, over-shoulder-looking, etc... Great group of guys over there and some sweet rides in their shop.

those are bad fawkin arse.

My hood paint is taking a quick turn for the worst.... no dinero for a real paint job so I am looking at flat black high temp paint and ditching the factory pad. I would love louvers but Ill probably be stuck with either A) nothing or B) cheap hood vents.

I'm keeping detailed records of costs and will post all the details of the project so people can see what it takes ($$, equipment, time, etc.) to get the job done and of course so we can see the results and determine if a DIY paint job is worth the savings or not.

I think you'll be able to swing it for pretty cheap with a single stage paint. Wait on that high temp hood paint job until I get some numbers and info for ya. If that pad is in bad condition ditch it, if it looks ok still hang on to it... it's gotta be there for a reason... I guess. :meh:

Dust is the devil

I painted a 79 Ramcharger in my garage, man there a lot of fumes in there. I had to take lots of brakes to let the air clear. I had one heck of a time getting the coat to lay down smoothly because of all the atomized paint in the air. Had lots of red paint in every nook and cranny of the garage even though I had bagged the whole area. I think this is why so many on here go with bed liner and flat paints, perfect finish is much less important than with a glossy coat. I hope you have access to a shop with proper exhaust.

Make sure not to reattach the damage multiplier after doing all this work.

I said high temp paint (like for grills that they sell at the hardware store) because I know that pad helps protect the hood from heat. Vents should also help keep the paint from fading due to excessive heat I would imagine....

I don't think all 80's came with the hood insulation. I have the bottom level equipment package on mine, cloth seats, no side steps, no roof rack, no rear wind deflector etc and no insulation on the hood. My brother in law has the same year land cruiser as I do, both built June 1995 and he has the insulation, but his is a higher line set up with leather, roof rack etc. I thought at first mine was just missing, but the Vehicle Information Sticker on mine is dead center of the hood, brother in law's is off to the side. A hood insulation mat would cover up the vehicle information sticker. I think this is how the assembly line determined if it was supposed to get the hood mat or not. Sticker in the middle, nope, sticker off tho the side, yup.

Looks fine, and if heat was a big problem I would think it would be shot, I live in Phoenix. Paint is white.

I hope you have access to a shop with proper exhaust.
I'm going to seal my garage as much as possible and rig up an intake and exhaust and test it out before spraying. Hopefully my plan works. I don't want to have to worry about fumes and can't wait to see my neighbors fence painted. (the exhaust will blow out the side window of my shop into his fence) :D

Make sure not to reattach the damage multiplier after doing all this work.

I actually sold that for $200 the first week I got the rig. Even after I explained why they're a bad idea the guy still wanted to buy it. :meh: Whatever, give me your money.

I've read the poverty pack 80's didn't have that insulation under the hood. UV's will kill clear coat and paint. I'm sure the heat doesn't help but UV's are evil.

I would definitely do a test shot of something to make sure you are not going to exhaust the overspray all over the neighbour's fence. That would be bad! Or maybe you don't like the neighbour....:D

I told my girlfriend this is what progress looks like, she rolled her eyes and laughed at me.

Front axle shafts and driveshafts are being rebuilt.
The roof is white now.
The black around the windows I painted a semigloss black, maybe should have gone flat but we'll see how it looks soon.
Still so much to do and so many more front axle parts to clean.

I should have the axles and shafts back by friday.
Picking up the 6m1 paint tomorrow, hopefully spraying soon, lots of prep work still to do.
Still tire shopping.
Need a long list of parts from the dealer.

This is what the roof looked before.

And after, still wet in spots.

I really like how you brought the white straight across, up on the pillars. It looks sweet. I've been considering doing bedliner on the lid, but never liked how it looked on the pillars where others have ended it.

:zilla:

That line will be higher and curved when it's done, like Summit Cruisers 92 below. I over sprayed the white, it'll be covered with the 6M1 when it's done.

Shot my laser temp gun at the truck and there's a 30 degree different in surface between the dark paint and the white.

Got it done. Front axle rebuild, remove roof rack and deflector, body work and paint.
The front axle work went great.
The body work was ok.
The paint went pretty bad, but I actually like the look I ended up with.
It's more of an olive drab than 6M1, the gun and compressor I used were garbage.
I loved this project and can't wait to paint again.... with a better gun and compressor.

As soon as the tires hit the ground I test drove it.... to Florida.
I'll add more photos as time allows.
Thanks again for the tech help.
SummitCruisers was a huge help with this project.

The hood louvers are amazing. Really surprised by how much hot air blasts out of them.
