Update:

Spending most of my time attempting to get the windshield frame off the cowl. Screws were all stuck. Finally got it off and turn attention to the engine bay. Plan to remove, clean and replace as I go.

Pulled and cleaned the SD-40 carb. need new sight glass as the one on it was broken (PO said it leaked there). Rest of it looks good. I'll see if I can obtain some new gaskets and rebuild the carb.

Also started slowly working on getting rid of the pale green/light blue engine color combo.

Valve cover is now black. Going to start working on the rest today.

Wish I could change the title to "Early 62 FJ40 Buildup" but I will at least continue to post here.

Started tracking down a bunch of the vehicle's numbers.

Frame VIN: 1-FJ40-10917 early 1962 or late 1961??

Engine Number - F188968 plus the Mt Fuji? logo for the F135.

Also shot a pic of the driver's side block numbers.

Also took some pics of the intake, exhaust manifold and generator markings.

Guess I got leftover FJ25 intake parts.

Exhaust manifold looks like it has an adjustable "flapper" inside. Any idea how that was used or further hooked up.

In case anyone is wondering, even though I am missing some parts, I am going to attempt to bring this back to original as best as possible since it is such an early FST. Any reason why I should not (other than hard to find parts - FJ25 guys seem to pull it off)?

Generator - alternator?

Interesting shade of green under the black on the frame VIN pic. Did early FJ40s have the frame painted the body color like the FJ25? Not sure of what the early paint colors should be since most of the sites I have found with paint codes don't go back to 1962. Of course the data plate on the cowl is missing.

Excellent pics! First time I have seen a lot of pics of the engine of an early FJ. Love that top thermo housing and honking huge generator. :D
Compared to what shape mine was that body is in excellent condition. A local sheet metal shop could make up a passable floor for the drivers side if you want to replace it with new.

Keep the pics coming!

Generator:grinpimp:

Yea, yea, yea:o Had to throw that one out there. Was not really sure. I had restored early Mustangs where the 64.5-65 had generators vice alternators. Learn something new all the time.

thow it out  do you still have it?

Throw the question out there....not throw it in the trash

oh.. my bad. I just glanced at what you said vs reading and comprehending. I do it all too often :(

Yes.

Thanks.

I also tend to start before brain is in gear.

Now to wrestle the rusted studs in the exhaust manifold out.

Too bad you didn't get the gas tank ........................... because that's a FJ25 fuel fill opening. :frown:

Looks pretty good. Some great vintage stuff there. The original transfer case should be offset, the centered rear differential was a holdover from the 25. You should also have the early side shift three speed, worth a picture to show it off when you have the tranny hump removed.

Top is not available, original bows and doors are near impossible to find. Check out the early aftermarket soft top alternative.

The gas tank is the same as other FJ40s. The filler neck is the part that is different. At list in my 61 it's the same. the only that is different is the float. But that is still the same as the ones thru 63

I posted in the 25 section a long time ago pictures of early FJ40 transmission and transfer. I also posted a picture of the gas filler neck at one time. I think the tread had to do with venting and none venting gas caps. If you search my out post you should find both.

I'm leaving town right after work tonight and won't be on the internet until next week. But I have alot of picture of my 61 hard top and will post any picture you want of that one.

That orange tube that runs from your valve cover to the bottom of the carb is wrong. There should be a PCV valve on the side of the oil filler tube. A hose from there runs to the bottom of the carb. A second hose runs from the vent tube on the valve cover to the air cleaner. The crank case should be negative pressure and the air being pulled out of the crank case is made up by filtered air from inside the valve cover. Otherwise unburned gas fumes that get passed the rings won't built up in the crankcase (real bad with a engine with worn rings) instead it is pulled back into the intake. This was a big inprovement over what our old FJ25s have. All we have it a open tube pointed down off the oil filler tube that relieves the pressure off the crankcase.

Got some more done today. Cleaned up the intake and exhaust manifolds and boxed them and some other parts that will get blasted later.

Spent forever working on removing the PO cattleguard front bumper. What a pain. I also have some repair that will need to be done to the front frame horns. maybe find someone with a rusted out frame that the front ends are still in good shape. I will also need to track down the side bumper brackets and the top triangle brackets.

Got the generator off and cleaned up. You can see by the pic that the original green color was hiding under the band on the generator. Also cleaned up around the tag. Anyone know where to get these rebuilt? Don't want to clean and paint it correctly only to have nothing inside work.

Rest was removing more off the engine. Cast aluminum thermostat housing has one of the mounting tabs broken around the bolt. gasket was holding it in place. Can JB weld be used to fix it?

Also took another pic of the frame in a different location to see if it would be body color like the FJ25s or black. The other area seemed like it was painted black (last color before I got to metal and very smooth)

Also pic of the damage that the crappy bumper did.

I envy your workspace (no garage=garage envy)...and knowledge...etc...great pix. Can't wait to see it when it's done.
