H i Folks,

Today I boutght a 1994 80 from a friend of mine for 5k. He is the original owner and has maintained it well. It has 143,000 miles on it. It needs a muffler and exhaust work he told me. I need advice on where to have it done, dealerr, Meineke etc or order parts and have private mechanic do it.

Also, my 2000 Durango is now for sale.

I would have an exhaust specialist do the work. If there is a Midas in your town--avoid them at all costs!!!

You gave up your 2000 Durango for a 1994 Toyota? Good move!!

Thanks for the reply. What about Meineke?

My wife hated the Durango. It has been totally problem free, she just doesn't feel safe at all driving it, braking, bouncy etc...

One thought...for the exhaust, if you go with the dealership and have them install the muffler (and whatever else you need), Toyota offers a lifetime warranty for the exhaust system work performed. Not a bad guarantee and I recall someone stating that the price charged by the dealership was pretty reasonable.

Thanks for the input. I'will also give dealer a call and compare prices.

Welcome to the forum and the cruiser family!

Depending on what you're replacing, you may find that the dealer prices are (much) more expensive - isn't the LC exhaust system stainless?

If so, you want to make sure you are comparing apples to apples. If you do decide to go the dealer route, one option would be to order from our man 'C-Dan' who will pass on a very nice discout for OEM and then get it installed by some local shop.

PS, can you post the dealer pricing - I may be in the market at some point in the near future.

I recall another thread, not too long ago, discussing OEM replacement exhausts. That's what I remembered when I posted my reply. I'd bet a person could go to a dozen dealerships and get a different quote from each one. I remember that the price for the exhaust was competetive.

Five Grand?

Holy cow Batman, that was a GREAT buy.

Does it have locks?

trinitony, I went with stock parts. Easy to install. I tried 3 different aftermarket mufflers and they all had a drone at hwy speeds. Others have had better luck. I like it quiet. If any of the parts have the rubber mounting cushions on them, also get those. The studs break upon removal.
BTW I also got rid of a Durango (99) with the 5.7l. It never failed me but at 25000mi it was making me nervous. (it is a dodge ya know). The durango sucked in snow even with BFG ATs, and was really bad on washboards. Yea 5K wow. Got lockers?
Cheers,
Sean

I'm am really new to this ttruck. Its now even registered yet, hope to do it in a few hours.

Dont laugh at me...but what is lockers that everyone is talking about......

Lockers are devices in your differntials (Center of acle thing) that make this able to go where others can't.

Here is a great link on the subject. If you have front and rear lockers (Option Switch to left of steering wheel), then you have 3 lockers, 1 on each axle and one at your transfer case to tie the front and rear together.

Thanks for the info!

I check and I didnt see a switch to the lleft of the steering wheel...guess I don't have lockers then... ..it does have the other shifter in the center to go from low to high....

I too would suggest a custom muffler shop. Not a chain where I think they bogger everything up. And oh yaa :flipoff2:

WOW that is a good buy! - The future of Land Cruiser owners is bright! I would try to find a non-chain muffer shop that is owned by an individual in your community. I found a great one here. Enjoy!
