So I bought my second TLC today, a '70 model. I sold the "71 I had in the '80's and I wish I hadn't.

What I need/looking for - Hardtop, doors, rear tire carrier and info about upgrading the steering and the brakes. I realize the worst things about a TLC are the steering and brakes and this one is no exception. It takes a while to stop and the steering wanders a lot.

Any and all help will be appreciated.

where are you located?

we've had 2 or 3 70 series in the club.

you can tighten up your steering box screw to see if it helps with your steering.

contact Quinton about brakes as he used a hodgepodge of fj cruiser and 80 series parts to upgrade his

just saw that

ignore everything I said

I am in High Point, yes it is a FJ40, 1970 and needs a lot of care. I tried to respond to a PM but the forum software wouldn't let me so the offer I had for a roll bar will be accepted.

There was a white hard top and doors up for sale in either ONSC or Upstate Cruiser's for sale section about 3 weeks back or so. I am sure that you will find it if you start paging back. Converting the power steering is pretty straight forward, I did one for a customer last year with a kit from JT Outfitters I believe and a steering box from an 82 Toyota pickup. There are also plenty of kits available for the disc brake conversion as well.

You can do an fj60 steering swap also. I have all part numbers / POC's if you or anyone else wants them. it is not a hodge podge of parts but about the exact same kit Ipor used to sell. You can also do a front disk brake conversion using fj60 outer ends and then do a Poser rear disk brake kit along with a Fzj 80 master cylinder / portioning valve for the rear brakes and be GTG.

I am new to this forum and it seems to work much differently from the ones I post on. Could you point me in the direction of the hardtop for sale please.

Any help here will also be greatly appreciated. The current steering is loose as a goose and the brakes are mush.

Thanks a lot!

I have a lot of 71 and 72 parts in charlotte. Send me a pm if interested

Drum brakes if adjusted right will stop you on a dime. Go in the 40 section here on Mud and look for adjusting drum brakes. If you were closer to me I would say bring it by and I could give it a good once over . Steering slop could be a few things. Pretty easy to diagnose with a friend helping and knowing what to look for.

I have some rust free sides and rear cross member.

I agree wih Darin, I like my drum brakes. A little adjustment every now and then and getting used to the overall handling and they're no problem. Now, you can't jump from vehicle to vehicle and assume they're going to work like a set of ABS discs, but if they'e not stopping the truck, it's not the fact they're drums, it's the fact that you have something not working properly!

Very well stated Brian.

Doing an upgrade to disc brakes, in this case, will certainly enhance the braking on a 40 but if driven within the parameters of the vehicle design with properly adjusted equipment it will stop just fine.

We've got a couple of awesome cruiserheads up in High Point. One of them may have a hot-rodded 40 :D

Post up some pics!!

Look up the two penny trick in the 40/45 tech forum. Did wonders for my wanders. Hehe... On the '70 FJ40 I had. Best thing is it only costs two cents. Really.
