Hey all, I've been reading posts on this site for years but was too shy (lazy) to become a member. I bought my '72 FJ40 in the second semester of my freshman year at the University of Arizona in '86. My parents helped me with a loan to get a car, and off a motorcycle with three stipulations. It needed to be something reliable, get good gas mileage and have low miles on the clock. When I found the 14 year old LC and called for the money my dad asked about all three items, to which I answered, "Dad, it's a Toyota!" Still driving it 38 years later. If your car turns you on every time you get in it, you're driving the right car.

Cool story. Mom help me get mine too - she didn't like my motorcycles either. They can get good mileage if you don't try an push the aerodynamic box threw the air too fast. Mine came with a 2BBL Rochester, Delco distributor, I put on the header when the exhaust manifold cracked in half.

Yep, lied to dad about everything but the reliability! It has undergone various transformations over the years but <almost> nothing that couldn't be undone. It has a 2F, SM420 and disc brake front from a '77 but I still have the 3spd and drum front. I just overhauled the transmission and transfer case, new tie rod ends and recently got the motor back from the machine shop. After all that goes back in I'll do some spring work, new drive shafts and upholstery. Keen eyes will note the tub is later ('73) than it should be, that's because I rolled the truck in '92. Here are a couple of pics I could find right away.

Wow, 65mph! Mine looked a lot like that actually. Ironically, I lost the back end of mine on the last turn before leaving the pavement for some wheeling.
How much did you repair vs replace?
