new member with a question

Hello everyone, ive been a lurker here for a while. Bought a 72 back in October, shes a little rough but runs good. I developed a pretty bad transfer case leak and plan on fixing it this weekend. My question is whats the correct weight of oil for the TC? Ive seen a few different choices but not sure on whats the right choice, thanks in advance

I use Castrol universal 80w-90 with some Morey's heavy duty oil stabilizer.....think I read that on here somewhere.

Welcome. Most of the time a good 80/90 is what you want. Did you find the leak?not out of a vent or pushing it into the trans. Is it?

thanks guys. Burbot, not yet going to drop the skid plate tomorrow to see where its at. looks like it might be a bad pto cover seal

Watch those bolts on the skid plate. First time I took mine out they were rusted in there. Broke two of them off before I got a system in place to get them out.

Take a good look at the parking brake drum. Very common to leak there.

So finally got round to doing it today. Surprisingly didn't break anything and it went fairly quickly.

@65swb45 Ill have to take some pics and bought it off a guy down in Corona. I just had the parking brake drum done so I eliminated that first. It was leaking onto the very back portion of the skid plate and all seemed to be running down from the PTO cover. It had stopped leaking once the fluid level got down below it.

How did it look when you checked the levels on trans n transfer case?no contamination? Po
Of ours never washed the engine and the whole underside was coated with 25 yrs of oil. Was hard to trak down as oil was everywhere.

Transfer case was definitely low. Need to check the trans tomorrow. There was no contamination, the oil looked brand new. When I had looked at it last week, you could see where the oil was running down from around the pto cover. It seems over the weekend the oil level dropped below the bottom of the cover because it stopped leaking. While I was under there I checked everything else and it was pretty much dry everywhere else.
