What's up everyone. My name is Cody. I'm in Albuqueruqe. Recently bought a really clean FJ55! Sadly she's still back east, but I should have her in the next 10 days or so. I have an old business contact who's an LC guy who referred me here. Maybe some of you know Larry Gorman. Anyway, I'm a Toyota guy through and through. My daily is an 05 Sequoia on 33's, wife's is a GX460 (her 2nd). Over the years I've owned a 91 & 95 4Runner, an 09 and 11 Tundra, an 06 GX470, and an 07LC (why did I get rid of this one!). Was actually looking for an FJ60/62 to be the daily, but a clean, low mileage sorted one is getting pricey and I dont have the proper garage or skill set to get into a serious rebuild project. This beauty popped up on ebay and was well under what recent auction numbers show one this clean should go for, so I low balled it and actually won! I was really excited and sick at the same time, knowing I was definetly in over my head!

So I've spent way too much time diggin all over MUD tring to learn as much as I can in the last week. I realized quickly I want to dump the dizzy and carb asap. From there I'll have to run though it once I get it to see what else pops up. That said, the truck belonged to the owner of a Toyota dealership and he has an air conditioned showroom full of classics where she lived for the last 10+ years or so. She's been fired up regualry and serviced by the dealer shop. That said, there's some goofy stuff under the hood, so I'm not sure the depth of service the shop has gone into. I know it fires right up and drives based on videos. It's been rented out for weddings and events ect, so again I know it drives and has the approval of the dealer shop, for whatever that's worth. The truck supposedly has 70k on and it's the original engine, but I haven't checked numbers yet.

Anyway, I'm sure somebdy on here can be of help. I'd love to take it somewhere in ABQ you guys can recommend or connect with an FJ guy who knows the F engine inside out so I can get a once over on it. I know this is probaly gonna kill most of you FJ40 guys, but the plan is not to build a crawler or even a trail rig. Just want a nice running clean machine sittin on 33's for the weekend cruises and maybe occasional run up to the slopes in the winter. Hope to hear back from the locals and say hello if you see us on the road around town...which is hopfully in the next few weeks!

Wow, that looks like a show truck.

First welcome to HDC. Any friend of Larry's is a friend of mine. If you have been poking around MUD at all you know there is the FJ40/FJ55 tech section at:

But, did you scroll down far enough to see there is also the FJ55 Preservation Society?

I suspect you will be able to find everything you need between those two groups.

Hi and thanks. yeah, I did intros last week on both and have certainly been doing lots of digging on both. too much to digest! haha

I'm disappointed with all the Toyotas you've got that it took you this long to pop in and say hi. I know Larry and Pierette so like Jon said, any friend of the Gormans is a friend of mine. Oh, great looking FJ55 too. Welcome.

That’s an amazing Pig. You’ll want to hang onto this one forever. A red and white Pig would be one of the very few vehicles I would give up my 40 for. Yes on the carb and dizzy replacement. Actually your engine bay looks really good. Do I see a power steering pump(?). That’s an addition. Prioritize the steering and brakes before diving into Anything else. Well done.

Hi and thanks for the reply. Yep on the power steering, which is the suspected reason for the goofy air clear setup. Brakes are supposed to be tip top, but we'll certainly find out! I also see a little wet under the oil pan (pic below) which I'd like to sort sooner than later.

As for carb & dizzy, I get the original Aisin and NippoDesno vaccum retard in a crate in the back which is great (pic below). The plan is to have someone rebuild the carb, or call Mark's Offroad and see if he has an exchange rebuild on hand. I'd like to put Pertronix in there so a vaccum advance dizzy is in order. IWas going to ask Mark's Off Road for that too. I've also considered a DUI or 81+ FJ60 dizzy with ignitor. All that said, I'm sure I can get those parts bolted & wired up but will need some help getting it dialed in for sure! I tried to put a pertonix on a ford 390 years ago and couldnt get it to run. My wrenching skills are pretty limited. Bolt on, wires, sure. Tuning, timing etc, sadly no experience, hence the ask for a local guy or shop I could work with.

Anyway, thanks and any good info is always appreciated!

I have a 78 electronic 2F dizzy sitting in the garage. I put a LT1 in and never used it.

I thought I read the new ones work in the F. Is that one of the bigger ones where you need to dented side plate? Do you need an ignitor?

Thanks

Larry sent you to the right place. Too bad he doesn't come around here anymore.
That's a beauty! Glad you will be keeping it original-ish. That's my favorite of all the 4-door cruisers and certainly hard to find a clean one. I can't wait to see it at one of the Daily Grind breakfasts. Congrats on the find!

I believe you are correct. it's the larger one. I have the ignitor with it. I'll be out of town on an antelope hunt starting tomorrow. If you are interested, we'll catch up next week.

Thanks for the reply. I'm pretty excited about it, even if I'm in over my head, which is certainly the case! The plan is definitely to keep the drive train as is, but to get her as reliable as I can. New carb, dist, and whatever else pops up, which hopefully isn't too much. Gonna see mostly pavement, maybe some light off roading, but for me I just think it's a cool looking, rare truck that I can't wait to get on the road! Lots to learn, including basic stuff that's old hat to any old car guys, but Im ready to dig in, hopefully with some life lines from this board.

Lots of folks in this group that work on their junk and can help you solve any problem you encounter. Just be careful of @alia176 He will try to get you to spend all your money on things of questionable value.

78 or 79 will fit without the dented side cover. Just need the ignitor for the electronic dizzy.
If this is true, I'm interested. Not sure where I can get the dented side plate if it's the big one. I heard 81 was the year they went to the real big one, but I'm honestly not sure

I'm back. until next week. 5oh5 6oh4 7868. in the middle of changing cell carriers so give me a day or so.

I'm pretty sure I have the 78 or 79 version, but I got it a while ago. I put in a V8 LT1 in '05

Thanks the reply. I think I'm gonna just go with a Marks offroad new dizzy with pertonox installed to go with the rebuilt and ported stock carb I have. I appreciate the offer though!
