Hi,

I'm new to MUD, fairly new to Nevada and am looking for an FJ40 to use to access remote areas of desert mountain ranges.

Being new to Nevada, I didn't realize just how restrictive DMV is for what they will allow to be registered in (Clark County (Vegas) and Washoe County (Reno)), unless its registered as 'classic' and restricted to 5000 miles per year.

So, I'm looking for either:

1. An FJ40, newer than 1967, that has already successfully passed the Washoe County or Clark County, NV Smog test and been registered in NV - BUT, not as "classic".

2. An FJ40, older than 1968 - no smog test required, if the engine is also older than 1968. This can be located in-Nevada or out-of-Nevada, BUT, (for me) the body and chassis VINs MUST match.

3. An out-of-Nevada FJ40, newer than 1967, that has:
a. matching body and chassis VINs;
b. original engine, with any associated smog equipment (that was included at
time of manufacture) - smog equipment MUST be working
OR
replacement engine that is the same year (as the vehicle) or newer AND
includes any associated smog equipment (that was included at
time of manufacture of the replacement engine) - smog equipment
MUST be working

I'm not looking for a 'queen, a 'crawler'' or a 'project' - I merely want a safe, dependable LC that can get me where I want to go, in the remote areas that I love to explore - I really need to quit tearing up my Tundra.

I want the 40 to be as stock as possible - no SBC, etc. Minimal rust is acceptable - but only minimal.

I prefer to stay under $15K, but will go as high as $20K (cash) for the right 40, with the right equipment.

But, its IMPERATIVE that I be able to comply with the Clark County, Nevada registration requirements- I need to drive more than 5000 miles per year.

I apologize for the lenghty text, but there's no easy way to say all this...

Please PM me with any candidates.

Thank you!

Danny

NV FJ40

Danny,

Welcome to the MUD!!

I was in the same boat as you are just a couple months ago. Living in Las Vegas, I had most of the same requirements. I was looking for what seemed like eternity, but found the perfect FJ40 on these exact classifieds from a fellow MUD member (bsquared-THANK you). Hang in there as it is not an overnight journey, but the right FJ40 is out there.

If you have any questions in the mean time, feel free to PM me.

Good Luck,

Blake

I found my '78 40 today in Texas - should have it here in a couple of weeks.

Thanks to those who replied.

I'm in North Las Vegas

It won't be here for a week or two, but I'll try to post a picture...

Someone tell me how to post a pic off my hard drive and I'll be happy to do so. Otherwise, I'll have to find time to read the manual...

Thanks for the praise of my new 40!

Yeah, I know it seems ridiculous... it actually seemed ludicrous to buy a 40 that cost more than my Tundra to kick around in... just to keep from destroying my Tundra.

I have two reasons for 'saving my Tundra' - they may not convince anyone of my sanity, but I'm not trying to - I'm merely stating my reasons:

1. We use my 2002 Tundra (with 86k original miles, topper, Firestone air bags and hitch receivers on both ends) to tow a Casita 17SD travel trailer. While its a small trailer, the 40 is not rated to tow this weight to the 10.5k' where we spend as much time as possible camping and fly fishing when the summer heat hits (previously Central Texas and now) the Las Vegas valley. I don't plan to ever buy another tow vehicle.

2. Even more importantly, being a 65 year old, two-time retiree, cancer survivor, I'm not getting any younger - as my younger daughter (41 in March) says, "YOLO" (you only live once). I spent much of my life, either overseas (in Europe) or in a whole 'nother country (Texas) - neither of which have 'public land'. Moving to Vegas allowed us to reunite with our elder daughter (43) and afforded me the opportunity to explore extremely wide open spaces. While I have no plan to rock crawl, many of the secondary roads in The Big Empty (eastern Nevada) are very rough - the 40 is better suited for this than my Tundra. Even the roads to the various trail heads in the Desert National Wildlife Refuge are rougher than any road I had previously traveled with my Tundra! The Big Empty is just that, big and empty - you have to plan well to ensure you have sufficient, fuel, water, supplies, emergency kit, etc - and, especially, a vehicle you can rely on. As much as I love my Tundra, the 40 will give me an enormous feeling of security - especially since, its generally just me and Sgt Gunner (my 8 year old Golden Retriever) ....and, as I said, I don't plan to ever buy another tow vehicle.

I always wanted a 40 and I don't ever buy anything that I can't use - granted it's a better investment than my Tundra and is likely to continue to appreciate, while my Tundra continues to depreciate.

But, I will use and enjoy it, for as long as I am able (many years, I hope!) - eventually, it will go to my younger daughter and son-in-law, for them to do with as they see fit. But, I honestly can't see them ever selling it - they are as excited as I am - we share many common interests.

So, there you have it... I get your point, but I bought it to use and enjoy and I will take care of it while I do both.

Again, thanks for your kind comments - I 'preciate it!

More Pics

While I'm waiting for my 40 - here are pictures that were sent to me by the inspector - he says it looks like it was previously red - you can see red in some of the pictures.

BTW: If anyone needs a good comprehensive inspector in the DFW area, check out autoinvestigation.com (Tony Marino) - I was extremely pleased with him!

Congrats Danny!

Congrats on the new 40 and she looks awesome!

Maybe a bit too awesome Danny. Those side panels, wheel wells and hood look way tooo clean for the Nevada desert. But I do have a GREAT solution. Swap those out with my dinged, scratched and perfectly patina'd parts from my 40. :p What are friends (we have known about each other for a whole week!) for? :grinpimp:

On a serious note, the new baby does look like a great find. Let me know when you are hitting the trails. My co-pilot is a 4yr old Australian Shepherd who would enjoy meeting Sgt Gunner.

Thanks,
Blake
