I wanted to introduce myself to the group.

I just purchased a 2001 Lexus LX 470 with 107,000 miles and are looking for upgrade ideas and any advice.

I have found the following problems with the LX 470:

1.) The plastic piece that runs up the A-Pillar on the passenger side is loose and vibrates at 60+ MPH. This might have been caused when someone replace the windshield because this windshield isn't stamped by Lexus.
2.) The outer most rubber surround on the back glass is loose but, not tore.
3.) The cargo light don't work unless you have the headlights on. I assume it is a bad pin switch in the hatch opening.
4.) There is a small rust spot above the windshield. So I need to find some Lexus gold touch up paint somewhere.
5.) While stopping at a stop sign, the LX 470 cut off the first night I owned it. It didn't flash any codes and started back up easily. The LX 470 has been sitting up but, Lexus dealership just cleaned the throttle body, fuel tank, fuel injector service and tuned up with non platinum plugs about 18 months ago.
6.) A small amount of steering wheel vibration while applying the brakes lightly? None on cruising or hard braking.
7.) None of the running board lights work. (I am assuming this year model has them?)

The good parts:
1.) I have wanted a LandCruiser for over 30 years so I feel like a young man again!
2.) The interior is 99% perfect. Even the drivers seat doesn't even show wear.
3.) Lexus just replaced both front axles and alternator in the past 2 years. So hopefully, I will not have trouble with these parts for a long time.
4.) The suspension and steering feel perfect.

The future plans:
1.) Upgrade to a full blown stereo system while keeping all 3 rows of seating. I purposely looked for a non navigation LC or LX so that I could replace the headunit. This has the ML stereo. I am going to add a center channel speaker, replace the headunit, factory amp and all speakers.
I own the following: (1) JBL MS-8 DSP (2) AudioFrog GB10 subs, (1) Focal K2 Power 3 ways for the front doors, (2) Arc Audio 1200.6 xDI amps and tweeter and midrange pods in case I want to mount speakers on the a-pillars. I need center channel speakers, wire, RCAs, rear door speakers and I want to add a set of speakers in the 3rd row area too.
2.) Maybe some rims and tires to toughen its look up some. So looking for some ideas here.
Thanks for reading my extra long post and please don't pull any punches on any responses because you will not hurt my feelings.
3.) Then LX 470 and I are going on a long road trip!

Looks like fun coming up! The windshield replacement and subsequent rust on the window frame could be a concern because that is a job that is often not done right. One thing you might want to do is not just touch up the rust, but remove the windshield trim and make sure all is well with the sealing and installation. That will saves headaches later from water leaks and rust. You'll want to do a full preventative maintenance on that beauty, with fluids (including the AHC) and lubrication, and filters, etc. Do all that before wheels or sound system just so your investment will last as long as possible. Have you had any more trouble with the engine stalling? The steering vibration while light braking will likely be the front brakes. If it's been sitting for awhile, that may go away with use. But, check the pads anyway as part of the PM.

Hi Sandroad,

No more issues with stalling. When I purchased it was very low on gas. The first thing I did was fill it up. I then drove it probably 100 miles Saturday in a mixture of city traffic and country roads. Parked it for appx 5 hours and it stalled about 1/2 mile from where I started it.
Cranked back up easily.

The next day (yesterday) I drove it another 30 miles and it drove flawlessly. I think I got an excellent deal on it, so I have money in the budget to fix any problems so that it will last me for many years.

What type of shop should I look for to fix the rust above the windshield and other trim items? Lexus, trim shop, paint shop, window repair or etc?

Yes it has the AHC. I don't know when it was changed but, it looks great. I jacked it to the highest point and didn't seem to leak down any for over 15 minutes. But, I don't know the proper test procedures for the AHC yet. So I will find your post and thank you!

I took the LX 470 to a Toyota dealership service dept. last night. They are supposed to fix all the known problems that I listed and do a complete inspection on anything else. I will post on what is done and the prices.

I second what sandroad said about the rust spot by the windshield , my 01 is a SW vehicle with zero rust but I did notice a couple small spots at the top of the windshield , after researching here I took it to a buddy that has a body shop, they pulled the windshield and found rust under it, enough that required grinding and treating and painting luckily they saved the windshield and the cost was pretty minimal .. but if left could have become a much bigger issue. This was the result of a bad install earlier on, also most glass shops don't want to do this as if it's to bad underneath then the rig has to go to a body shop ...
