Snagged a '99 Limited on the cheap ($2700 with 207,000). Needs a slew of maintenance to be tip top but I love a work in progress and as it sits, is fully road worthy. Previous owner did the minimum so a few items were neglected but it's got good bones. I'm running cooper rtx's 235/85 r16 with the original sagging suspension. OME 881's and 890's soon to be installed along with new inner and outer tie rods, ball joints, etc. I plan to do drawers in the bed eventually. Will be getting timing belt and water pump replaced next week. My goal is a reliable rig for cruising forest service roads of The Southern Appalachian mountains, mostly with specific fishing destinations in mind. I'm trying to keep it light as it's also the DD so doubt it'll ever see a bull bar, sliders, other sorts. It does have the factory e-locker so plenty capable. It is not my first Toyota 4x4 but it is the first of this vintage and the only automatic I've ever owned! It's kinda weird not shifting and in many ways more pleasent. I need to add a trans cooler to the list too I suppose. Anyways, love the forum. Happy to finally register.

Welcome and congrats on the rig.

Check out T4R.org and congrats on your new ride .

Thanks folks. T4R.org seems pretty decent and obviously 4Runner specific. Pics to come once I install the lift. Still dumping change into sensors. Seems like I get codes for one thing at a time like cylinder 5 misfire. Changed the coil all was fine. Weeks later, tps sensor. Replaced now back to normal. Seems like the ecm re maps the systems performance then finds another weak link. It has smoothed out at idle but seems slightly sluggish (has always felt a bit sluggish unless I floor it) I suppose the 5vzfe is no powerhouse and I'm used to Cummins low end torque. Maybe that's just the way it is. I need to replace u joints likely too and drain and re fill diffs. Should smooth things out. Luckily the fiancé 's father owns a garage with a few lifts. I'll report any complications. Oh, found a local mechanic to do timing belt and water pump for $525 out the door. He said if I bought my own Toyota parts it would just be $350 in labor. Stealer wanted like $900 which of course they called a "special".

Oh your a Cummins guy to ,why don't you try doing the T/B and W/P? A lot of treads on T4R you will find. What Cummins do you have? 12 Valve 6BT? Go find an AISIN kit with all the trimmings it should include W/P and pulleys and hydraulic tensioner.

Just be patient with it and it will be a good companion for a long time.

I ended up having the w/p and belt replaced by the aforementioned shop. The thing barely started after I picked it up. Scared me for sure. Had him explain and he blamed the starter. Kinda bugged me but it did show signs previous to pump and belt replacement, just not as severe. I decided to tackle the starter myself. Unbelievable pain in the tail. Getting the darn thing out between manifold and brake lines was just arduous. Starts as it should now.

Ive owned 2 12 valves. 93 and a 95. Both 5 speeds. Just a darn good engine. Rest of the truck kinda sucks but the simplicity of that motor and the voids under the bonnet made it such a pleasure to wrench on. I am forever a Toyota lover and plan to keep this vehicle for as long as possible.

Hello. I just picked up my new to me 01 SR5 from the Atlanta area. So far just doing a few things to get it looking decent. PO had done all the needed maintenance just was in disrepair.
