Thanks guys, that is a great idea. I have been spinning the starter for a LONG time trying to pull the gas from the tank but I like the idea of a cheap inline elec. pump or a brake bleeder set to try and fix this...I'll give it a try.

Yes, it is basically new. I replaced it shortly before I seized the engine. I am pretty sure the fuel pump is working well. Well, maybe not well enough...
 
Pull the fuel pump and make sure the foot is positioned aginst the lobe and not under it, it is possible to install wrong and it won't pump.
Next get a 2 liter coke bottle fill it 3/4's full with gasoline, remove the fuel line from the tank install a rubber hose on the inlet side (the side from the tank) insert it into the bottle and see if the pump is working.
If you tank or fuel line is restricted that will eliminate them. Be sure the bottle is fairly secure and not near the fan if the motor should start.

Sweet. Another good idea. I'll throw this idea into my bag of tricks and let you know what works for me.

In the meantime, I have been neglecting my trail pig for years now mostly because of this project. I have missed the McGrew Trail ride for the past couple years and have been trying to get back since I first experienced it back in 2004. So I have now been focusing on the trail pig and am preparing for the trip down south on Friday. I'll have to post pics after that as well.

Wow, what a weekend.

Made it down to the McGrew Trail Ride in Southern Oregon/Northern Cali and had an absolute blast. I was able to enjoy myself this time much more. More confidence, less anxiety. The ol' pig, she did swell but we had to have a little help making it home. Drove over 500 miles this weekend, mostly highway/backroads and some off-road.

The engine in the trail pig has not been sounding that great for a while and I was a bit concerned about putting this rig through this much use/abuse. Unfortunately, I began burning and seeping oil from my engine at an alarming rate as I drove home Sunday afternoon. With the help of some good friends and extra oil we limped Lucy as close to home as possible. After I heard a crazy, metal grating metal-type sound while limping the rig along the highway I finally gave in and called AAA. We were towed the last 45 miles home and delivered to our driveway, where Lucy now sits awaiting perhaps the next re-incarnation...

I may have FUBAR'ed my trail pig's engine, but I also made progress on Lily.

I now have gas flowing to the carb! It turns out that the original fuel pump on the '81 donor engine required a spacer to work properly and it had remained on the block when I removed the '81 fuel pump. I replaced it with the pump I orig. had on the orig. '77 engine which I knew worked well. The spacer, however, was not letting the '77 fuel pump engage with the crankshaft, now matter how hard or long I cranked the engine over. So, I pulled the fuel pump, discovered what was going on and re-installed the '77 fuel pump without the spacer and it immediately began to fill the fuel filter and then the carb. Gas had been in the fuel line almost right up to the filter all along. Easy fix.

I also finally figured out what was wrong with my throttle linkage (from the firewall to the carb). I was missing a bracket that held the 'throttle rod' in place. Found that in my pile of 'extra parts' (hee, hee) and slapped it on the carb. Now the gas/throttle all works well.

Now I need to confirm exactly which vaccuum hoses I can leave disconnected, which I need to connect, and which to plug, etc. I am planning on making an appointment for the exhaust work soon. More pics to follow.
 
I made an appoinment at the exhaust shop but had a few things to finish up first. I installed the vavle cover, air filter assembly, slapped the hood back on, swapped front bumpers from the trail pig, and had to secure the exhaust under the rig until I got to the shop. This required cutting the last foot off in order to shove the exhaust up into the engine bay and hold it in place with the skid plate temporarily. That worked and got me to the muffler shop. Exhaust is now finished and it sounds pretty good.

The engine is running a bit rough and sounds like it is sucking a lot of air. I need to figure out which vacuum hoses to connect and which I will not need now that the carb has been 'desmogged'. I'm partially done with this...Valves and timing sound pretty good. I'll have to tinker with it a bit more.

man o man, i was just up at my place (used loosely) in selma OR and i really wanted to take the pig up but the wife didnt like the idea since i'm doing SNT this year. well maybe next year i'll invite myself.
sucks about lucy, but it looks like you'll be able to drive lily now and work on the "other" woman;)

I would have loved to have met you. Someday soon perhaps. My wife has gotten used to random cruiser-freaks dropping in unexpectedly and introducing themselves. I usually have a cruiser or two or more out front which attracts certain folks, as you all may know. I have met some really good people that way.

Oh, I MIGHT be cruising down to S n' T this year as well, in Lily. We'll see.

Um, yeah my friends thought it was neccessary to film and post that little vid for properity's sake or something or other. :)

Oh, and how about a rear end pic, just to make you drool.

I have been thinking of bringing the rig into a local fab shop to have them alter the rear bumper. I would like to incorporate a license plate holder and more of a tube cage welded to the lower ladder that would more securely hold down the gas can. I have a nice FJ40 OEM license plate holder that I plan on mounting to the ladder/gas can cage. Should look cool. I would also like for them to remove the old latching mechanism, that uses a camming lever and seperate pin to unlock and open the swing-out portion of the bumper. I have seen some cool latches, with no parts to lose, that should be easy to source and work well. I also would like them to weld/install a hydraulic shock to help keep the swing-out open (on hills, in general, etc.) I'll keep you all posted on those mods.

More updates:

I have been 'fine tuning' my ride over the past week or so. I have been driving to work each day and each day I remember something else that needs attention. For now I'll stick to the engine. I am doing a complete desmog of this engine. The carb had been made 'bionic' (desmogged and built from the orig. '77 and an '83 carb for the best of both eras!) by Jim C. and the donor engine was also desmogged when I purchased it. It already had the air rail plugs as well as some exhaust/vacuum ports blocked. I am still figuring out what to leave connected and what to plug and what to remove and...

Second pic: I had to plug this hole in the intake manifold and I bought this brass plug for it.
