Edit 16-Jan-2009 to put info at the top of the thread.

Ok - I've tested the new modules in an FJC and they fit beautifully. So, I now officially open the flood gates to ordering the new style dome modules. Nice thing is that the same tab length works for the FJC and 60/80 so I don't have make different flavours.

If you want to order them, they are $30 each. Pack/ship is $4 (US) or $5 (International). Please email me at george at taskled . com and I'll send you the payment details (paypal or cheque/money order etc).

-------------------------------------------

After ending production of the previous LED module design I decided to do a run of a new design that requires a lot less manual steps.

They should be available in a few weeks - just ordered a bunch of stuff. The new design will be more compact so it will fit into the FJC since a lot of those folk are looking for brighter interior lighting too. I'll just use longer tabs if necessary, for the 60/80 series to still fit, though it may be possible the same tabs can fit both. I don't have access to anyone locally that I know that has an FJC, so final fit will wait until I have finished boards on hand.

I've also switched to using the relatively new lumileds rebel - very tiny/compact LED that puts out a surprising amount of light for its tiny size.

The following picture (just for size reference) shows a Seoul LED mounted on a Star base (the style I used in my previous dome modules) versus what a Rebel looks like. I'll be using ONE bare rebel directly soldered down to the new Dome driver board.

The new design has similar performance to the old design. So, from nominal 12.8V input it will still draw around 100 to 110mA and thus provide long runtime without fear of a discharged battery overnight if doors are left open/ajar. The new design will also be able to run from nominal 24V (for the diesel folk that have 24V electrics).

Being a smaller width board (0.5" versus the older 0.8") it will easily fit without requiring the removal of the heatshield (that some 80's came with) as per the following picture:

Anyhow, figured I'd give you folk a heads up of what I'm working on, since there was a lot of unhappy/sad procrastinators that missed out on the final run of the old style LED modules...

cheers,
george.

cool!
just as soon as I get another cruiser, I'll plan to get another module
or maybe I'll finally add some lighting to the cargo area of the 80....

hi george, from the picture it looks like you used 1 LED in the old design. will the new one be taking 4?

Good news, I was bummed I missed on these.

No - that picture was for size reference - it is NOT the dome module design.

One Rebel is what I'll be using - it puts out as much or more light than the Seoul I was using before.

More than one Rebel will be too much heat to dissipate from the board.

Maplights - too much work to build those, sorry...

cheers,
george.

Just got my 80... looking forward to see what you come up with since I've been following your LED mod.

Put me down for 2 when your done and ready to start moving them...
Thanks,
Dave

Good to hear George. I will need 2 when they are complete.

Just in case you decide to do something for the maplight, someday, my vote would be for **dimmable** map lights.

The LED maplight module that I have is too bright to use while driving. GREAT for using when the vehicle is stopped!

I'm in for a few, as well.........this may be too difficult to discuss here, but what about some sort of retrofit of the newer style "recessed can" lighting found in the '03 and up 100's? The ones to which I'm referring are the sort of amber-colored lights that glow at night and illuminate the shifter area. They're recessed, so they provide no glare at all, just a soft light so you can see the interior.......if a high-output LED were substituted in a housing like that, that would be one AWESOME map light........plenty of light, but no glare!

Just a thought......

Nice to see your doing this again George. I am reall happy with mine and your Subtank ECU.

I do have another 80 and a 3rd gen 4runner. Do you know if the 4runner dome is the same?

Thanks for doing this. I know alot of people will be looking forward to get these.

As one of the disappointed procrastinators, I am very happy to hear you're doing these again! Put me down for a couple when they're ready!

I need two when they are ready :)
