OregonLC - thanks for the response! Is there a FAQ or general info on the AHC system? I tried searching but it turns up tons of threads. Just looking for the basics...how does it work, when was it offered, and perhaps info on the Slee box you speak of.

Used LXs are a good bit cheaper, and more plentiful. I had my eyes set on a 98/99 LC w/the e-locker but for the cost savings I can likely buy an LX and spend 2.5k on F&R ARBs and get on board air as an added bonus and be at the same $$$ I would've spent on a LC. Plus I really like the wood wheel on the LX.

Thanks again.

Ok nearly 12 years later I have this question about the LC vs LX. Now that buying these cars would be used with close to, if not at already 200k miles, what is the better purchase? The price tag debate doesn't necessarily make a difference anymore. The warranties have run out, so service departments aren't a big concern. Which would you rather have now? And why?

Reason I ask is because I'm in the market for an 80 but there is a lx470 at an extremely good price. Input would be appreciated. Thanks!

IMO, lx 470 is more common on the used market. AHC is a mixed bag... they can fail, and fail big. when working properly, the lx rides smoother and is more comfy. my 07 lx rides like a big comfy leather sofa. my 01 LC rides a bit stiffer. both trucks are prone to rust. look for a rust free truck and enjoy.

What is the intended use of the vehicle? Trails or Hwy? You simply cannot beat a 100 on the Hwy, its just so comfortable, but on the trails a locked 80 is almost unstoppable. Don't get me wrong, the 100 is very capable, but for hardcore off road use I'm taking my 80. After having a 100 I could NEVER see my 80 as a daily though, 100 all the way for that. I think the 100 is great for mixed driving but if you are looking for a 2nd vehicle for off-road I would go with a factory locked 80.

Intention for use would be for weekly hiking and occasional camping trip. Honestly, I don't see myself "hardcore" off-roading but will definitely need something worthy of getting me to those lost in the woods trails that I just can't do in my, now sold, Jeep Liberty. As far as DD, I use my camry as a DD and live in the city so I wouldn't be driving it everyday. Well I just saw a pretty nice 80 but off to see the Lx470. Thanks for the input guys!

Keep in mind that "nice" locked 80s are getting harder to find. Buying one now, building it, and loving it, could very well lead to a rig that you will want to keep forever. I have formed an attachment to my 80 that I don't think I could ever have for my 100. In a few years I will sell my 100 to buy a 200 for my daily, but I'll never be without an 80.
Also search the 80 section of the board for the 80 vs 100 debate. Those guys are entertaining to say the least.

I have a question regarding axles. For model year 2001, are open diff LC axles/diffs the same as LX 470 axles? Specifically, are aftermarket traction adding diffs the same part numbers?

I think you are in the wrong forum. Check in the 100 section.
