After a long search I finally picked up my 2006 GX in Nautical Blue Metallic. OME lift in the garage and new wheels shipped (wheels were chipped and peeling). Now the real question: what tires to go with and what size?

Vehicle will be driven 90% on road and traversing the farms and creekbeds when it goes off road. I'm looking as small as 265/70 and up to a 285/70. So far I'm liking the BFG TA KO in load range C or D.

I would appreciate any input you guys may have.

J.

welcome! if you've already got the lift, then go 285's. for reference, my wife's stock GX with 265/70/17 BFG AT KO's is pictured below.

That looks good, but I can see where the lift would make the tires look a little small. I priced out tires at Costco today and will be going to Discount Tire on Tuesday. Costco was going to have to order me a set unless I wanted the Bridgestone Revo's.

Unless you wheel a lot (or trailer it around), it will be more than 90% road time :) Actually determining the mileage offroad vs onroad might surprise you at how little offroad time there really is. (I wheel a LOT...for instance, my Rubicon trip a couple weeks back was maybe 50 miles offroad and 4500 miles on road...)

anyways ;)

285 Cooper Discoverer A/T3's with a 2.5" front lift and 2" of lift rear (adjusted air sensors) installed on FN Wheels 17x8's. Have had them on for a week, about 1500 miles thus far (drove from WI to CO the day after install)...thus far, impressed with the noise level (or, lack of) the highway manners, and their offroad ability...tomorrow is Poughkeepsie Gulch (Ouray CO) and we'll see how they do :)

I use Duratracs (285s) and they perform well on and offroad. No complaints!

OME was put on yesterday - much more work than I had anticipated. Getting those KYB adjustable shock mounts off the top were a headache. I've driven about 40 miles since then and the suspension feels much "tighter" if you will. Wheels should arrive on Wednesday and can hopefully have new tires installed and mounted this weekend. Pics will then be forthcoming.

What's the largest size that I can fit in the spare location? I've read that 285's were a no go.

Dan - your build and writeup (along with SSS) is what made me want to get a GX (originally shopping for a 100 series).

I bet you don't regret it a bit! So much better than a 100! :)

Really? I'm on the hunt and look at both. I can get a GX for much less and considering it, but don't want to regret not getting a 100.

Yeah wife and I were looking at the 100 series but the power is about the same with the GX in a slightly smaller package this will be her mall crawler so no major mods when we get the GX however it seems prices have shot up recently. A few months ago we were seeing 2007/2008/2009s with 50k on them going for less than $30k and now can't find a single one. WTF?!
