Hi all,

I'm new here. I just picked up a 2015 GRJ76K 30th Anniversary from Japan auctions with 4000km on it. Very clean and well looked after. The car is completely stock, but of course, i plan to change that.

The LC will be replacing my Toyota Fortuner as a daily driver. I have to use it for work meetings and stuff, so it can't look like an expedition vehicle, but of course I would like to do some mods to it, mainly focusing on interior, suspension and wheels. As much as i would like a full blown ARB expedition vehicle, i can't drive it for work so something more subtle will have to do (see attached pictures.)

I mainly drive on the roads here in Dili, the capital of Timor which are fairly smooth, but i go out to the districts on weekends for dive trips and up to the mountains as well and the roads get pretty rough. During the rainy season, entire sections are mud, which, combined with the steep terrain, can make things pretty hairy.

What I need help with is the tire and wheel sizing. I'm planning on slapping a set of Mickey Thompson Classic 3 polished wheels to it. I would like to go up in tire size to 285 - 315(?). The LC will have over fenders from Moto-rage Japan and some other more subtle mods. I think 16s are the right, but i'm confused about the offsets and stuff. What would be a nice tire and wheel size upgrade you guys would recommend? Pros and cons?

I'm looking to order a set of the wheels and tires and if anyone knows the best place in Australia to order from, I would be grateful for any recommendations.

The other mods I guess I would mention that would affect the wheel and tire choice is a set of OME BP-51 kit from ARB Australia. I'm looking for a 2 inch lift in order to keep the wife happy when she climbs in.

Thanks for helping the new guy out!

The most aggressive tires I have found that give you a mileage warranty is ProComp. You can actually get a mud tire with a warranty; at least in the US.

Welcome! You're going to have to post some pics of 4x4ing in Timor!

I'm not sure if the GRJ76 wheel arches differ much from other 70 series, but I'd guess that a 2" lift should clear some 285/75-16 tyres - I don't think you'd swing a 315/75 on that lift though.

With the offset what you basically want to do is end up with the inside edge of the rim / tyre in about the same position & any extra width goes outwards. Plus maybe a little more as a larger diameter front tyre swings in a bit further also. So if you are installing a 20mm wider tyre (285 vs std 265mm) on a 25mm wider rim (8" vs std 7") you need 10-13mm less backspace just to compensate for the width. Just a guess but the GRJ probably runs a zero offset wheel so that means you want a rim with -15 to -20mm offset. You don't want to run too much more offset than you need as it stresses the hubs & axles & will screw up the steering geometry.

This is all just theory though, if you are ordering from far away it would also be a good idea to jack her up & measure clearances around the tyres & rims at full steering lock & full flex. Oz 4x4 forums should also have some good info on the newer 70 series as that is where most of them get sold in the english speaking world.

Cheers
Clint

I have the same truck in Japan. I run a 2" OME lift and 285s KO2s on the stock wheels.

You can run 315s with a 2" lift but they do rub at steering extremes and I think it's too much. Here is the Outback Japan custom 76 with a 2" OME and 315s.

The current model 70 Series has a front track 100 mm wider than the rear track. This is because the front track was widened to fit the VDJ V8 but Toyota puts that same front diff in the GRJ models. This is not a big deal unless you spend most of your time offroad in mud or sand. All this is a long way of saying that if you are planning on changing wheels/tires, you should consider correcting the track offset. There are 3 ways to do this.
  1. spacers. There are a lot of people running spacers (50mm, or a little less, per side) but they're very dangerous unless you really keep a close eye on your wheel nut torque specs. This is the cheapest option but is illegal in many countries and is dangerous for obvious reasons. I would stay away from Chinese-made spacers and try to find something that is made in Japan or the West.

  2. -50 offset wheels in the rear. This is a good option but there are not that many manufacturers who sell these. King Wheels in Australia do, and I think there are others but I haven't found that many. Ronny Dahl who runs that great YT channel goes this way for his VDJ79. If you go this route you either run the spare as a 0 offset or if you carry 2 spares, you can carry one of each.

  3. Tru-track kit from Multidrive in Australia. This is the most expensive but best option. It's a fully customized longer rear axle, basically. Someday I hope to install this on my 76 but I'm not there yet.

There are a lot of options for wheels if you're going to run 0 offset. Bradley V are really popular in Japan. Lots of other options too. There's a great Land Cruiser book out with tons of options to look at if you want to import from Japan. 2015-2016完全保存版 LAND CRUISER CUSTOM BOOK

I'm one of the few 76K owners on this board so happy to see another one.

Was watching not so long ago in one Aussie YT channel a bolt on rear coil conversion for 76 / 78 / 79 series.. option was included wider rear axle housing.

Hi guys,

Sorry for the late reply but the 76 has been on to Moto-rage to get modded. It's on its way to me now. Finally decided on Procomp 1069s with 285/75/16. I'm thinking of spacers but I may not correct the offset at all since I don't really off road.

Hi gkanai, yes its good to have another GRJ76 owner on board! Think you are the first forum member i know who has one, but i'm late to the party. Thank you for your replies. They are very useful. Its also good to know you're in Japan as I'm partial to Japanese mods and I may need to ask your advice.
