New cruiser! Picked it up for $500 with 258xxx. Only things wrong are the crushed y pipe for the exhaust and the needed body work on the drivers side. I plan on some BFGs and new front and rear bumpers. What are some modifications that you guys think are necassary? I should probably mention im 16 and my funds are kinda tight......but im mechanically inclined and not afraid to try anything!

another kid yes

I feel like more and more of us high schoolers are taking over its awesome. I have a fj62 and im 17 its a fun rig. Some things you should do is put some new to you beefy tires like 32 11.50 are awesome... an aussie locker is super easy to install in the rear. MAYBE SOA later on.. oh dont forget to change all your fluids and clean the air filter and maybe new belts and plugs the normal new car tune up stuff.

:D have fun :wrench

Once you make sure everything is mechanically fine, Id install a lift and tires. A new suspension system (IRONMAN and OME are common choices) is more important than bumpers because it's pretty much what everything else is based around. If you are positive that you want bumpers in the future, go with a "B" or "C" rated spring (B if your gonna have F+R bumpers and will usually NOT carry a load, C if you will have F+R bumpers and WILL usually carry a load). I have IRONMAN "B" springs and even without bumpers, the ride is VERY comfortable.

If you're sticking with your stock rims, most people then get 33x10.5 tires. If you're getting a wider rim (8" or 9") 33x12.5 is the way to go. Ive had BFG ATs on a lot of different vehicles and they are a great tire for light wheeling and on road conditions and last a long time. If you want a more off road oriented tire BFG KM2s are great. I have Toyo open county MTs and they are FANTASTIC off road.

Aussie lockers and other auto lockers are a very very cheap solution for a huge advantage in traction off road. On road they arent really that noticeable. I would highly recommend getting one for the rear.

After youve got that, then start worrying about crashing into stuff with new bumpers. Good luck.

Where you located with those mountains in back?

Congratulations:cheers: (<- wrong smiley if youre 16 (no alcohol), so this one is better: )
Before you spend money for fun try to save some for must have stuff like oil filters and other maintenance that cant be ignored.
Are you planing to get it insured/road test or is it without plates for backroads?

Yeah suspension is definetly on my list as well is a rear locker. Ive already tuned, fluid changes, and tires of course are the next item for me. Im just doing the bumpers because i have a full sheet of 3/16" metal sitting around and need to get rid of it :)
