Yup, mine, too.... Dirk did an excellent installation. But I don't get snow down here in the flat-lands..

Just thought I'd bump this for an update - Year and a half +, glass and gasket still seem in new condition, and I park the beast outside. No leaks. Love the tinted-strip glass. A new windshield is wonderful thing.

Thanks for the bump. I may have to do this soon as the recent rain reminded me I need to do this.

Bump for this great thread.....

To the guys that did the one piece after market gasket from Precision, where did you order the gasket? Or did the glass shop order it for you?

My windshield had a crack, now it's completely shattered, I can't get inspection tags for it now, can't put this off any longer.

Which gasket is the easier to install, the OEM with factory chrome strips or the one piece Precision?

I'd let the glass shop order it, either the OE or the aftermarket. What's easier? That'll depend on the experience of the installer, I think. Whatever you install, just make sure they do the sealant on all sides, as described in the FSM.

Precision has a website if you want to go the shop armed with the current part #s. Post 'em if they've changed.

Good luck!

This is a great thread. I supplied an OEM gasket for my install. Used Binswanger Glass off of Chimney Rock to do mine (Speaking Houston here). They removed the chrome lock strip and reinstalled it. Looks great.

The only thing that bugged me a little bit was the headliner being a little ruffled at the gasket inside the cab. I straightened it as much as I could and it's fine. They supplied a PGW windshield. Been great so far. They did use sealant at the corners, and warrantied the work done. It hasn't leaked or anything. I'm happy :)

kline-
Good to hear you were satisfied with the result, that shop is pretty close to me.

I found a glass shop near the med center that has an old school mom n pop look and feel to their website, family business, they only do in house work, no mobile quickie stuff, lots of info about OEM, Chinese glass, sealants, etc on their site.

We'll see, stopping by there tomorrow to check them out.

.....Whatever you install, just make sure they do the sealant on all sides, as described in the FSM.....

The FSM only describes sealant for the installation of non-US style gaskets (General and Canada) that have no mechanical lock strips. The sealant is not used or listed in the FSM for lock strip style gaskets.

This is my FSM:

Doesn't say anything about USA vs Non-US.... And I think applying sealant errs on the side of caution. All the rust around the window I think speaks to the need for it.

Plus, the high-tech sealants now used were not avail back in the day... Why not take advantage?

Just my .02

Is the lock strip on the next page?

If you are supposed to use sealant with the lock-strip gasket, do you install the lock-strip immediately after applying sealant, or wait for the sealant to set up first?

I'm curious as this is on my list of things to get done.

So for the US gaskets you're not to use any sealant then? just want to confirm.

Thanks.

Update on mine:

Safe lite came out once with the wrong gasket, after I told them the Toyota part number on the phone.

Came again, and left without even trying when I pointed out my dash and headliner were perfect and I expected them to be that way when they finished.

Safe lite shop manager called and told me I has to bring it to his shop, 30 year experienced mechanic would take good care of it.

At the shop, they installed aftermarket gasket and windshield, gasket is an uneven mess. Fingerprints with sealant all over the place, (back door inside?!? WTF?!). I told my insurance not to pay and the manager said she would get O EM windshield and gasket and try again.

Three days later, insurance calls, tells me I have to find a shop who can do it, Safe lite won't touch my truck anymore. I tell them that finding qualified shops is their job. They are working on it.

:-( dammit.

You find the shop. Talk to the installer to see if he seems like he knows what he's doing or you're gonna have more problems. Print out the FSM pages and give it to him and say, 'do it this way.' .. If they don't want to, go elsewhere.

Your insurance co doesn't give a fawk, they just want you to go away and write more monthly checks.

You got an old school rig..
To assume any of these speedy shop can do the job is a risky deal..
Do you diligent job and search for a shop that's been around for a while and ask before you commit....
I would use the glue..just to be on the safe side....
Thanks again SPIKE for the write up...still looks great and dry after a year with an after market seal & windshield...

Dirk did a great job...!!

Wish Dirk was in NorCal,... I had mine done by a shop here last year with an OEM seal (bought by me) and their choice of glass but, it still leaks in the front corners... They won't warranty it again because I brought the seal to them...

Anyway, I might try the final sealing step outlined in the FSM myself if I can find the Dow stuff direct...

Well the streak continues! I have NEVER heard anything positive about Safelite. It seems that usually anyone who has work done by them is unhappy.
As the others have indicated, find a independent shop.
Also you may try this link to find some PGW installers.......http://www.prostarsautocare.com/

Thank you for the link and info. I don't want to step into the trap of picking the shop and supplying the parts - then its all my fault, and the insurance company will walk away. But I will check out whomever they suggest on that site.

Gotta do this soon. I hate leaks of ANY kind.

So Spike, If I go there with no parts, Dirk would be able to supply it all? or If I wanted to use the OEM gasket and chromes inserts, could he work with those?

Thanks!

I decided to try and tackle this tonight between rain storms...I went with the autoparts brand clear windshield sealant because it was what was available...

The problem I found was that the installer only had put a thin bead of black sealant where the windshield and gasket meet but, NOT, under the gasket as described in the manual. This was where the water was coming in. So, I was careful to get the new clear sealant under the gasket on the windshield side.

I'm going to go back and do the edge against the body as well, I'm now wondering wether the installer used sealant there...I'd suggest a flat plastic tool of some sort to work under the gasket edge, against the window. All I had was a small screwdriver...

More rain is on the way so we'll see if it worked.
