Got rock chip and crack is spreading quickly. I’ve got a glass shop and found this great thread. I’ve got the chrome trim. Can they reuse it? Jason

@Spike Strip I had to do some digging for this thread. Adding FJ60 to the title will help bring in up in a search engine.

It's in the FAQ. But who reads the FAQ ? :D

Don't know about the chrome trim, I ditched mine. But others have successfully reused it if not damaged when removed.

I'm OK with leaving the chrome out of the front window; however, my OCD is fighting me on having the back windows with one with and one without chrome.

I presume you are pulling the side glass to fix rust?

From inside the truck, pry out the window, seal, and trim all at once using plastic tire irons or a handful of screwdrivers. Don't remove the seal or chrome trim from the glass. Reinstall with soap and 1/4" rope.

There is no need to remove the chrome trim from the rear side glass rubber when you do it this way.
What about the rear hatch glass? I'm about to replace it and not sure how to deal with the stainless trim. I'm also confused about how to use rtv Sealant and soapy water a and a rope to install the glass.

Long s*** here but anyone have a recommended shop in Southern Idaho?

So i just did a front windshield on 75 fj40 which is a flat piece just like the lift gate.
What we did is let the seal sit outside in the open sun. We used coconut oil and lathered the seal and we dipped the cord in the coconut oil in the the jar. Installed the rope in the seal and pulled. When we got to the corners we added more oil as we did get to the curves one pulls and the other pushed while the third oils at the curves.
Take your time.
Once it is installed I think you can do the same with the chrome piece or black insert.
Good luck!

Leave the chrome in the rubber, and pry the rubber up on the inside with screwdrivers or tire irons and slowly press out the glass/seal/chrome. The glass, rubber gasket, and chrome all come out together. To reinstall, insert the 1/4" dia. nylon rope inside the rubber gasket (all the way around the glass and overlapping at the ends), set the glass on the hatch, and pull the rope down and out (while your helper pushes on the glass) and let it carry the rubber lip of the seal back to the inside. Slowly work your way around the hatch and be careful not to let it pop out, as it will want to.

You need helpers and patience and lots of soap and water. There must be a ton of videos on this on the Internet, so watch some of these. I don't use RTV when reinstalling this kind of glass and seal combo. Don't break the rear glass - it's NLA other than used.
