In anticipation of a camp trailer I’ll be towing this spring and summer, I took a look at helping my ‘05 sport run as cool and as efficiently as possible.
I upgraded the transmission cooler substantially, but what I’m more excited about is the exhaust (cat back) system I just had installed today.
Its made by BA Mufflers, also known as Dirty Deeds Mufflers. They are pretty well known in the Tundra world, doing a lot of work on the 5.7, and less so on the 4.7 trucks.
They have a system that they have designed for the gen4 4runners with the 4.7 V-8...it fits our GXs perfectly.
Keith Carty, the owner, calls it a 26x6...26” long, 6” diameter. I call it perfect.
Mellow, throaty pulse at start-up, great idle, very slight roar under moderate acceleration, and completely silent on the freeway.
Additionally, it gives just a bit more throttle response...I can feel the truck running easier, getting to speed more effortlessly. Like it’s just a little lighter on its feet. Nothing drastic, but seat-of-the-pants worthy.
The system I ordered has the “heimholtz” resonator permanently attached. I give that the credit for the mellowness and quiet highway manners.
Keith was great to work with, in person over the phone. He really knows his stuff, knows our engines well, and will take the time to design what you want...mellow, raspy, or anything in between.
BTW, I tried installing myself, and was all set to do it but ran into grief on the very first bolt. I’d hit them with PB Blaster the night before, and was expecting a moderate struggle but when I started to feel the bolt stripping (even with a 6-point socket), I decided to call in the pro’s.
A local muffler shop torched off the bolts. The nut I struggled with? It (and it’s twin on the other side) were welded to the bolt. I’m really glad I didn’t go nuclear and try to brute-force them off. Best $66 I’ve spent in a while.
Anyway, thumbs up to BAMufflers / Dirty Deeds. I’m a very satisfied customer.

This thread sucks without videos ;)

I’m looking forward to getting a new set of less restrictive exhaust manifolds.

Almost a year later.....any updates or words of wisdom to share? Did you do anything else to help improve towing duties?

Cheers!

All is well. Still really happy with the exhaust from BAMuffler. The throatiness is still there at start-up and under acceleration, but zero drone at constant throttle. Sounds like a V8 when it should, and a luxury vehicle on the freeway.
As for bits and pieces to improve towing, I’d say the Tru-Cool transmission cooler has to top the list. It’s so nice not worrying about tranny temps. I mounted a scan-gauge to monitor transmission temps, and the cooler made a massive difference when towing.
Last, I put a Pedal Commander on. Some will argue, but not if they actually have one. These just “wake-up” our engines. No extra power is produced. Instead, the existing power is more readily available. Hard to put into words, but it is more that hocus-pocus…the thing makes a real-world difference that I feel every time I drive, whether I’m towing a trailer or not.
Hope this helps…
